Cotounou - Senegal President Macky Sall, the current chairperson of the west African Ecowas bloc, and Benin's President Thomas Boni Yayi will travel to Burkina Faso on Friday to mediate in the wake of a military coup, Benin's foreign minister said on Thursday.
"The goal behind this is to achieve a return to normal constitutional life, freeing the president and prime minister who are hostages, and the liberation of all the ministers," Saliou Akadiri said on Benin's state-owned television.
Boni Yayi is Ecowas special facilitator for Burkina Faso.

Re: Should Nigeria Intervene In Burkina Faso? [updated] by CSTR2: 2:08pm On Sep 17, 2015
There is nothing to intervene here.
Just put a phone call to the coupist ,asking him to quit or face economic sanctions and possibly military invasion from the ECOWAS.
Promise to make a state visit to burkina faso as a sign of good faith, and the hungry coupists will surrender.
That is exactly how jonathan dealt with those west african coupists during his administration and was largely successfully.

our past leaders threw our foreign policy in the bin, we allowed a dictator rule over chad, and here is the embarrassing part, mediate between FG and boko haram (home grown terrorists)..

Yes.
First, let our president place a call to their current coupist; giving him an ultimatum to either step down in 24 hours or face severe economic sanctions and a Nigerian-led ECOMOG intervention.
If he remains stubborn {like laurence gbagbo},we should call an ECOWAS emergency meeting for a multilateral referendum and assemble our forces to invade burkina faso,we may act unilaterally if our economy permits us.

Nigeria has not even solved her own problems and she is seriously seeking for external help to defeat a rag tag boko haram in it's domain.

The best term to describe Nigeria's problem is 'Neglect'.. its the reason why we have boko haram amongst other things.

The present leadership of the country has no moral justification to intervain because the President himself was involved in a coup of which he has no remorse about

We have an obligation to interfere though not militarily. A resolution must be reached between the coupists and the government because if we leave things to fester there, cretins would have a field day and Boko Haram will begin to dream dreams of having a playing ground there!

Yes we should for the following reasons:
1. It is the perfect opportunity to rebuild our tattered foreign policy.
2. A proof that our military can fight in multiple fronts and sustain the fight for as long as possible if diplomacy fails..( that will send a message to potential foes) and act as a morale booster to our army.
3. Truth be said, Nigeria's image is at an all time high..the world perceives our election of the current govt as a determination by us to reject our old image and accept a new one...I interacted with a Kenyan friend yesterday and he was full of admiration for us..
4. We would ultimately drive off others from our sphere of influence...

My only problem is the cost implications if financing such a campaign amidst the current economic crisis in d country..hence a highly publicised diplomatic approach to resolving the coup crisis in Burkina Faso remains my first choice..

My 2 naira.

Yes! Nigeria should not let go her role as the BIG brother of Africa. Obasanjo intervened when there was a coup in Sao Tome and Principe. He also played active role in halting Liberia crises. Jonathan played a role in Ivory Coast crises. Buhari should step in and mediate the Burkina crises. We have the might

Dear Dr, it is our business. Non intervention will send signal to some military guys in the barracks that coup d'tat can be tolerated. We won't want to send such message.

Beside, Nigeria have the natural mandate as the most influential African country.
