Negotiations between President Muhammadu Buhari and Boko Haram with a view to ending the bloodshed in the northeast have so far been carried out at an informal level, Vanguard reports.

President Buhari revealed in Paris on September 16 that his government was indeed talking with the insurgents on how to end the violence, but did not reveal who the administration was talking to.

Meanwhile, sources with knowledge of the development said that some major elements of the group were talking personally with the presidency on how to reach peace.

The development, according to the sources, comes after continued army bombardment of Boko Haram havens. The source, who has been involved in previous negotiations between the government and the sect leadership, pointed out that there had not been any formal dialogue on a ceasefire with the presidency.

The source said:“It is true there has been an informal line of communication between the presidency and the sect members, but the leadership has not mandated anyone on its behalf to begin discussions with the government.

“Unlike before when the Department of State Services, DSS; office of National Security Adviser, NSA, and other agencies of the presidency were all reaching out to even phantom groups and individuals claiming to be representing the sect and claiming non-existing peace, this president has not made any formal contact with the sect yet.

Buhari stated that Boko Haram wanted the federal government to release one of its strategic leaders for the release of the Chibok girls abducted in April 2014. However, this swap was declined.

The Nigerian president returned to the countryon September 16, Wednesday from France, where he met with the French leader Francois Hollande.

Nothing new; Buhari stated during the interview that the Presidency was at the stage of trying to identify the genuineness of Boko Haram representatives.
