ABUJA—Cash crunch has hit the National Assembly and forced the Senate to put on hold the public hearing on power probe. According to a Senator, who did not want his name mentioned, the cash crunch was also largely responsible for crippling oversight activities of the various committees in the Senate and House of Representatives. The Senate Making reference to the cash crunch being experienced in the National Assembly, a member of the Senate’s ad hoc committee on power, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa (PDP Abia North), said the much-expected public hearing on power sector cannot hold for now due to non-availability of funds to run it. It will be recalled that Senate President, Bukola Saraki, had last month announced a 13-man ad hoc committee to carry out a holistic investigation into the management of funds appropriated to the power sector since the Olusegun Obasanjo’s civilian administration. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/09/cash-crunch-hits-nass-senate-forced-to-halt-hearing-on-power-probe/ |

GabrielSuswam:The truth is that the National Assembly have no prosecuting power. They can unravel and make recommendation to the Executive for implementation. It is however 'Advisory' at best and not mandatory. In sane countries, government take it up and prosecute indictees or the citizens rise up calling for the government to take action. In Nigeria, all NASS probes result into a new controversy. See for instance... The Reps were drawn into controversy over Lawan's bribery scandal in the Subsidy case. Maina accused the Senate of demanding bribe from him while they were probing him on the pension scandal. Aruma Otteh accused the Senate of demanding bribe from her while they were probing her of the SEC scandal. In this so-called power probe, can Senator Danjuma Goje escape if a serious probe was to be done? Remember he was the Minister of state for power under Obj's first term. 1 Like |
