LAGOS — The official vehicles imported for the office of the speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, are still lying fallow at the port in Lagos a month after they arrived the country. A source told Vanguard at the weekend that the four jeeps have been held down at the port by security checks which had yet to be conducted on them. According to the source, the security checks on the vehicles are necessitated by the fact that they are bulletproof. “ I wouldn’t know why those who are supposed to check the vehicles have not done their job. Those vehicles arrived the Lagos port for up to four weeks now. They say those checks are necessary because of the bulletproof they carry and for this, the speaker has been denied use of the jeeps and still left with the ones that break down all the time,” said the source. The vehicles are also said to have incurred much demurrage because of their delayed clearance. Media Assistant to the speaker, Mr. Kayode Odunaro, who confirmed the development, said the vehicles actually arrived the country over four weeks ago, saying without the mandatory security checks, the jeeps would not be released. According to him, the office of the speaker is hoping that the checks are conducted as soon as possible, so the vehicles are cleared at the port. Odunaro said two of the vehicles would be kept in Lagos for the speaker’s official use, while the remaining two would be sent to Abuja also for his use. He said the speaker had to contend with the old vehicles in his convoy which break down frequently in the course of his official assignments. It would be recalled that late last year, the speaker was grounded at the presidential wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, for some hours, following the breakdown of his official vehicle. |

Sigh!!! I remember one afternoon in Delaware, walking with my uncle and his wife from Main Street to the bank. The sun was so hot; we decided to stop at one of the houses to ask for water to cool our thirst. The house had no fences and no security detail. We walked up the small porch to the woman, sitting watching cars go by. You could tell she had been doing some gardening as her tools were all over the floor and she must have given up when the sun got real high up . She was quickly offered us cool water and offered to drive us the rest of our way. We insisted that we had to walk it as we were downtown to get some exercise. She gave us enough bottled water for the rest of our way. After we got about a couple of yards from the house, my uncle announced to me that the woman was the governor’s wife. I could not believe him as I had expected that governors in the USA would live behind huge fences with 10 times more cars, in fact huge armored cars, 10 times more space, and 10 times more body guards than governors in Nigeria have. This made me wonder why we continue to allow what we do in Nigeria. |
