The Lagos State Government on Sunday approved a seven-day regime, which it said, would allow any traffic offender that flouted any section of the 2012 Road Traffic Law pay their fine within the time frame.

The regime was a sharp contrast to an approach adopted by the administration of former Governor Babatunde Fashola during which vehicles were impounded on the spot of enforcement and offenders paid demurrage on every day their vehicle spent on the state’s custody.

The General Manager of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Bashir Braimah disclosed at the weekend when the agency started enforcing the new approach that allowed LASTMA operatives to fine traffic offenders on the spot with a directive to pay in seven days.

Speaking on the new approach, the general manager explained that the exercise was the first after the directive of the state governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on LASTMA’s non-accommodation approach of the offenders’ vehicles after booking.

He reaffirmed that the enforcement “will send signals to recalcitrant drivers and those who engage in transportation business in the state that it is no more business as usual as the 2012 Lagos Road Traffic Law is still valid and in existence and must be obeyed at all times.”

He said only the method of implementation “has changed. There will be no hidden place for traffic violators. The offenders are expected to make payment of their various fines within the docket of seven days and present their tickets at LASTMA offices.
