This poem is very personal to me. I hope you enjoy it.
**************************************************
From birth you held me like a pearl wrapped in velvet
Independently you nurtured me like a rose,
watered my knowledge
trimmed my intuition and admired my growth.
Took my bare bottom, rubbed it with oil and made an oath
To God above, that you will fulfil your obligation,
to a child and a husband
Who turned out to be a fatal conception
Of love and sacrifice and a woman's affection.

My life my not be an attractive one.
Yes...I've messed up
Did a lot of things I should be ashamed of,
like the fly phone in grade 10, financed by the robbery heist in her bottom drawer,
took fistfuls of the Nigerian smooth shiny currency and slid it down my underpants.
Abandoned school work and acquired rich friends....well, temporarily
I could only keep up with the flashy life momentarily
As my pocket money was really just a fraction of their grocery allowance.
Her account of my achievements should be a negative balance
With a history of disappointments and constant misdemeanours

A true woman of strength who suffered the strains of domestic violence,
She ducked the blows of manipulation,
Endured the slaps of household dictation,
to a ruler whose crown was jewelled by her labour and sweat.
Sweat that prepared a table with the finest of wines but drunk with stupidity
and resulted in a man without any sense of clarity.
Just as a peacock has no place in the grot of a rats lair is the way this damsel has no home in a leaper's cave

But still she stays.

She stays not because she is a coward or cannot hold a fierce lion by its groin
nor because she is handicapped and cannot stand without the muscle of another.
But because the incense of her courage serves as medicine to the diseased,
the burden that she bears serves as her motivation
but her best is yet to be unleashed

And so she stays.

To Sculpt my attitude like that of the woman who holds the torch of liberty
So that I rise above the unforgiving nature of this world and acquire serenity
to look fear in the eyes and say...
I am rich!
Not just monetary,
but physically,
intellectually ,
and with wisdom of endless capacity
Because her love is true, because her love is pure, because her love is faith.
For a woman so strong carries the word of God as her armour
Persistent in her prayers and resistant to the devils deceitful glamour

Though scared by my inadequacy of selflessness and humility she remained true
To the fact that she was once a child and gave me everything she lacked in her youth
Though does not excuse the fact that I abused my liver with alcohol,
violated my body with the sins of man,
looked at life through ignorant eyes and fell short of expectations.
But still she welcomed me with glorious jubilations

She stays because she is a woman of grace
She stays so that she goes at my pace
And in my eyes she sees her face
And opens her arms to provide a warm embrace

She stays
