It's 1984 all over again and the hypocrisy stinks even more. All of a sudden being in possession of FOREX is now deemed illegal. The raid on Onitsha market by men of the EFCC who arrested some traders for possession of dollars shows a hidden agenda to target easterners and stiffe their businesses. If holding forex is now illegal why are black market operators who are mainly ab0kis overlooked over genuine business men who require forex to carry out their legitimate transactions? As far as I am concerned the lazy ab0kis who stand in street corners trading forex they get illegally from the CBN and through money laundering are more dangerous to our economy than ibo traders. So why is the FG not clamping down on ab0ki black market forex dealers? It seems that ab0kis enjoy wide spread impunity to commit any crime of their choice under this Govt as can be seen with the rampaging fulanis and how selective the govt is to economic crimes. If you go to the north, smuggling thrives in Sokoto, Katsina, Yobe and Jifawa with the FG turning a blind eye. 6 Likes 1 Share |

This is exactly how Fela was arrested during the tyrannical regime of Buhari and subsequently sentenced to 5yrs imprisonment for possession of forex but during that same regime, a prominent northern traditional leader was allowed to smuggle out suitcases of dollars. May God punish all you apc zombies this morning 6 Likes |

The CBN can not meet demand of forex under the current artificial pricing and the little forex we have left is being pilfered in repaying Buhari's campaign sponsors in the form of bailout. This useless man will destroy this country. |

DaBullIT: Where is the propaganda? The EFCC raided Onitcha market last week arresting and confiscating forex from traders. Why is the FG not clamping down on black market dealers? Are they not the alternate source of forex outside the CBN? Dunce like you is so used to the lies spewed by liar Mohammed to even recognise the truth anymore. Fool 5 Likes 1 Share |

as you fail to understand it is not that northerners are enjoying special privilege. they have a system which you people fail to understand. any money changer you meet at the street corner is not holding his own money it is owned by his boss. and we know forex business is very capital extensive so very few people can afford it. so the big bosses have their licenses and registration with the CBN just like the commercial banks in the country. so they employ marketers (those street guys ) and will be giving them the currency to hawk on the street, so if the man is arrested he would just call the owner of the money to come and verify as a licensed forex. whenever you met those people have you noticed that they always have the same amount of cash in their hands? even if they just finished trading with a customer you can't see any significant change in the currency in their hands. the reason is wherever you find them their supervisors are there close by monitoring them and replenishing their currencies. those people you will meet are mere marketers not the real owners. Sometimes there are fake exchangers in such situations the real forex owners will have such personalities arrested. because even though there's great competition they have their way of settling their problems and they will expose frauds from their midst to the police so as not to blacklist the joint. check all those duped by the currency exchange you will notice the business is conducted in another place not their stands. so if someone says let me take you to somewhere to do the exchange run for your life. the exchange business is very complex and paranoid the people are very careful in reading psychology of the people they come across if that forex northerner whispers to you about somebody then take it serious. i don't know how they can tell a criminal from crowd of people but they do 2 Likes 1 Share |

Ngasky: Licenced forex trading is a highly regulated sector just like the downstream oil sector where subsidies exist. It is only Nigeria that operates two parallel forex markets with one not having any form of regulation. It is no news that thieving governors use these black marketers to launder stolen funds which they first convert to dollars in the black market and then use private jets and their diplomatic passports to ship the money to their Swiss bank accounts. The black market is a grey sector with the CBN not having a clue how much is traded daily. Let me take you back on how the black market became a thriving business. It was during the IBB regime. The IBB regime began the deregulation of the aviation sector and to kick start it, forex subsidy was given to licenced aviation operators. If you ever visited the local airport during the early 90's you will notice a lot of portakabin airlines along the aero terminal. All these airlines where owned by northerners and their only reason for registering as an airline operator was to source forex subsidy from the CBN which they sold in the black market. This continued unabated until the subsidy for aviation operators was scrapped and the establishment of the NCAA in 1999 which deregistered them. Don't take these ab0kis for granted. |

Allow me to digress a bit here.... The north has overtime lobbied govt policies to suit their selfish interests. Remember the export / import licence? Well at one time in our polity only individuals with an export/import licence where allowed to import and export goods. This is a legacy of the colonial produce board and registered merchants. During the colonial era the British operated produce boards across the polity where farm produce where sold and finished imported goods were distributed fir sale. In the north, the British employed prominent hausa traders like Dantata to supply farm produce and also distribute finished goods. In the southwest it was mainly for cocoa. Now this system was highly exploitative fir the peasant farmer. In the north, slavery was the main labour input and this was abolished in 1938! The British had since abolished slavery but for the financial gain, they turned a blind eye to slavery in the north. In the sw this exploitative arrangement came to an end with the Agbekoya Parapo cocoa farmers' uprising in the early 60's! The legacy of this produce board will later morph to the export and import licence regulation which came in force after the civil war. This legacy continued up to the IBB deregulation regime. What the export and import licence did was to create powerful rich families and individuals who exploited local farmers and producers and the general public. After this policy was rescinded, trading and businesses activities increased exponentially and wealth distribution became more wide spread. Cntd....... 3 Likes |
