I am a student of Physics, i am being discouraged by friends that i wouldnt go far with it.

With Physics degree you'd really have limited job options even in the West. I think you can take careers in research lab, nuclear power companies, geology but I'd suggest a physicist takes a PG on geosciences. You'll have better opportunities with masters. It's not the best of career path especially in Nigeria. You should have gone for a contemporary course.
