Hundreds of students of University of Lagos (UNILAG) staged a protest in the early hours of Monday to register their displeasure over what they called "proliferation of bedbug-infested mattresses in the halls of residence." The protest which started as early as 7.00am saw many of the male students emerging from their different hostels to participate as the procession moved round the campus before it was terminated at the school main entrance in Akoka. Many of the protesting students said they can no longer bear a situation where their health is constantly exposed to danger as a result of untidy premises especially with the bed bugs spreading on their mattresses. "We have asked our representatives to meet the school management, but so far nothing good has come out of those efforts. So, we feel that except there is a demonstration the management won't take us serious," Bimbo Akanji, a 300-level student said. Another protester, Chidi George said at the commencement of every session, the hostel fee is often collected by the school management. He wondered why issues that border on bedbugs, dilapidated toilets, among others have never attracted management attention. The protesters shut the school gates for several hours, making vehicular movement to and out of the school campus difficult. The incident also led to high traffic congestion that stretched from Abule Oja to Saint Finbarrs Road, both of which are adjacent to the school gate. However, the University's Deputy Registrar, Information, Olagoke Oke described the students protest as unwarranted saying information at the disposal of management indicated that those who championed the protest were actually looking for a way to extend the date for second semester examination. "The protest is not in anyway justified. We have found out from University of Lagos Students' Union (ULSU) and its executive had told us that they were not ones who called the protest. We have found out that students who were behind the protest were just looking for a way to shift the forthcoming examination which is billed to commence in two weeks. "On the allegation of bed-bug infested mattresses. There is no truth in that. The UNILAG management replaces hostel mattresses at the end of every sessions. After the exams, this session will close, then students can be rest assured that new mattresses will be made available again," Oke said. http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/news/students-protest-rocks-unilag-over-bedbug-infested-mattresses/112740.html 1 Like |

The school management should fumigate their hostel and get rid of the stuff. |
