Like I said, don’t believe everything you read/hear. If there’s any government who uses the media for the sole purpose of spreading ‘tales’, its Anambra State Govt.

Well I don’t know about that but I wont be surprised if its true.

The fact is that the Governor’s naturally stingy and of course people will always complain. But that’s not even relevant. If the Governor’s doing what he’s supposed to do, then I don’t think people’s complaints will count. The man’s a business man and over the years it has become obvious that while he’s not embezzling the public funds, he’s enriching his business with it. That way he makes his gain and leaves other people hanging.

As far as I’m concerned, they are all one and the same thing.

Who in his right senses will say such a thing in public? Even if they say it privately or think about it, how will they say that to the press? That’s just not right.

I won’t be surprised if the State Government which is in APGA fabricated it to discredit the PDP afterall PDP’s the only credible opposition for them in this upcoming election.

what makes PDP a credible opposition?
what and what have you seen to make you conclude that APGA fabricated the story?
if its true the story was fabricated, why hasnt the person credited with making such claims come out to rebuke what was credited to him?

Is Nigeria Really This Bad? YES!

The Nigerian government is probably the most useless government our universe has ever witnessed in her 14 billion years of existence!

If I had the means, I'll relocate 10,000 Nigerian youths per annum to places where they can develop themselves instead of being allowed to rot in the most shameless kleptocracy man has ever devised!

Home is home? Nonsense talk! Man's home is the planet earth! Anywhere a man is on this planet is home. After all, many Nigerians are treated much better in places outside Nigeria than in their purported "home".

In Nigeria, the murderers in uniform can kill a Nigerian and label him an armed robber. Their would be zero consequence and the perpetrator would do it again. In many other countries, such a crime would be investigated and the lowlife brought to book. But never in Nigeria! The Nigerian Customs Service, extortionists par excellence, steal money from Nigerians importing goods into the country and even stoop as low as stealing mails mailed into the country! No investigation, nothing! The Nigerian Army, go around killing, raping and maiming civilians, and nothing, absolutely nothing is done to stop the carnage and bring the soldiers who commit these barbaric actions to book - Odi, Tarkw Bay, etc.

While the kleptocrats in government divert funds to their private accounts and enable their cronies in the phantom private sector, many Nigerians are dying from curable diseases every minute. Meanwhile the brainless goons in flowing dashiki travel abroad for headaches and foot massages. Their is nothing homely about being treated that way. The Nigerian government is utterly useless!

If you pack 10,000 Nigerian youths to other places like you said, in one year, that country would have been spoilt, go to South Africa, go to Ghana, your youths are the ones spoiling the place - what are you talking about?

The above statement is not only try, it is what in mathematics you describe as an IDENTITY. Humans are very migratory in nature, they migrate to areas of better food, water, shelter, opportunities. that was why man was able to leave africa and populate the whole world.

Mr. I-Laugh, home is wherever you have settled and have been accepted by the people you meet there. And i must add that, it is that your concept of home that have created the settler / indigene dichotomy that is ruining the country, and it is also a great contributor to our corruption (it is acceptable for an indigene to embezzle, after all it is our money).

Can anyone in this thread tell me that their present so called home is the home of their great grand father. Do they not know that one of their fore fathers left their home and settled somewhere else. Do you know where your great grand children will decide to settle.

This settler indigene problem was started by some earlier settler to exclude others from money or position or political allocations, when Nigeria adopted the method of sharing or Federal Character.

Finally, Most of the people that claim the US as home today had grand parents from elsewhere. Obama's father is from Kenya, but Obama's home is the US of A.

Hmmmm, You are in complete self denial, stop fooling yourself! You know damn well that you are Nigerian and it has to be fixed! You will find out where you are from when you have been bound and gagged and dumped on the first availble flight to Nigeria. If you reside in the west and you have black skin you will be victimized you know it! Obama is a coconut who has been chosen by the democratic party to prevent the Clintons from taking power. He has not mentioned Africa Once and he never will - it dose'nt get votes. When he talks about his American forefathers you know he's bonkers!

All the places Nigerians are running to were built based on self sacrifice and determination, I think that this forum exemplifies the reason Nigeria has not developed. There seems to be a waste of energy over petty issues and a huge lack of self belief! If Nigerian people are the problem - then Nigerian people are the solution.

Nigeria isn't that bad. The sad thing is, Nigeria is a potentially powerful country cripled by mismanagement/stupidity/cruelty/greed, of its leaders (and citizens to some extent). Nigeria isn't "this bad" but it should be better than this. She's a giant lying dormant.

Mr linxon,

Please read the post carefully. If you say London is not your home then London is not your home, and i will suggest GO HOME and take your children with you if you have some.

But from my memory of history, the English people are a mixture of races from Angles, Saxony, Germany, Vikings, Normandy and lately Jamaica. even the monarchy trace their roots to Germany. So if you cannot make London your home then go home, but i can tell you that the English Society treats you far better than you would be treated by the Nigerian society outside your village.

@ B118

Please stop that propaganda, What makes Nigeria a powerful country?
Is it military power?
Is it economic power?
Do not let that Giant of Africa slogan get into your head. Power is not measured by population or the Arabs nations would be deemed more powerful than Israel. Most powerful societies in history were very small in terms of population and physical size. Rome was a village, even Britain that conquered half the world is a very small place.

POWER IS MEASURED BY TECHNOLOGICAL AND INTELLECTUAL STRENGTH AND NOT BY LAND MASS OR POPULATION OR EVEN MINERAL RESOURCES.

Thats wierd, you said I had not read your post in its entirety, well you did not say much, you just complained! First of all I was born and bred in London so this is my home, but I am responsible enough to realize that I must contribute to the Land of my forefathers.  Secondly, save your English History lesson I was taught all that as a kid everyone with a couple of brain cells knows the English are a from Sweeden (Europe) and Germany (Europe), they are all brothers!  So I will have to tell you the blinding obvious YOU ARE AN AFRICAN, YOU ARE NOT EUROPEAN! So do not try to live off of the achievements of Europeans, look at what you can do for your nation.

You took a cheap shot by mentioning children, well, like I told you, you will be deported soon with all of your children (if you've got any) so you will not even have a say in the matter. You and your whole family bound, gagged and deported back to Naija! grin

What I have detected from your posts is that you have an inferiority complex and you have no faith in your own people due to the fact that you are totally brainwashed!

U missed out the word "potentially" while reading my post, Land mass, population and mineral resources are not a measure of power where do I even start to argue that, i mean come oooon. As for intellect i've met some intelligent and skilled Nigerians home and abroad, most of these people are working for companies in other countries because Nigeria doesn't offer them much and some are looking to get out of Nigeria, because Nigeria offers them nothing.

An example, Nigeria has crude oil, yes. However, how much did Nigeria invest in discovering the crude oil or building refinaries? what use is crude oil in its natural form?

We have a fertile land, sunshine and rainfall, what use is this if we don't develop good farming, i mean in the current global situation, Nigerians would have had a strong standing in the world by being the major suppliers of food, cash crops and mineral resources but we've eaten the cake long before we could have it

Another sad example, orange juice in a carton say, tropicana (note where it is always written in tiny prints on the carton "from concentrate", well except u buy the made in aba one lol); how much would 10 fresh oranges cost?, now this company buys these fruits at very low price from the farmers, squeeze them, then dry them (so that its easier to transport), and in the process of drying and all this palava a lot of the original nutrients from the orange is lost, it gets to the country they add water, some sugar and ascorbic acid or some other preservative e.t.c, and package it niiicely so that they now sell it back to WE, mumus, at 10 times the price albeit it containing less than 1/2 the nutrition of the original fruit which in the first instance grows naturally in the country or origin.

Hence my use of "potentially powerful" instead of "powerful"

And where i mentioned that the citizens also are part of the problem, Nigerians would pay more for anything imported and avoid anything "made in Nigeria", u know wot i'll leave this bit
Re: Is Nigeria Really This Bad? by wirinet(m): 7:01pm On Apr 21, 2009

You allegation that i complain is not founded on facts, on reading my posts i have not seen where i have made even one complaint.

Now I reside in Lagos and Lagos is my home, had been for the last 30 yrs (save from the yrs i spent in university and a brief sojourn in London). Although both my parents were from riverine villages right at the heart of the Niger Delta. I cannot point to the villages on the map even if it is enlarged to the size of a stadium. So most likely i will live and die in Lagos.

Having said that i have very close cousins who lives in London, some have been there for over 40 yrs, some married oyinbo, while some married other blacks - Africans and Caribbeans, and have made London their home. The possibility of them or their children ever coming to reside in the Niger Delta (where their father is from) is very remote.

You said I have inferiority complex, but the reverse is the case. It is you that have inferiority complex. Given that there is some racism in London, there is racism everywhere. In fact the tribalism we experience here is worse than the racism you can ever experience there. In England racism is often restricted to individuals. but in Nigeria it is a National Policy, both Federal and State. You are admitted into a university not just because you score high in JAMB, but also by your state of origin and who you know. In state universities "non indigenes are made to pay up to 3 times what indigenes pay.

You have limitless opportunities in London, the society has developed to a state where merit is recognized and rewarded. So do not feel intimidated by white skins, you can do better than all of them if you go beyond your complexes. You can be mayor of London or even Prime Minister.

People keep howling " YOU ARE AN AFRICAN", without defining who an African is?

Is it about Dark skin color? - Arabs are also Africans, or are they not?
Is is about Cloths? We were mainly shirt & trousers, Even the fabrics of the so called traditional cloths are made in Europe or China .
Is it about religion? - we worship white Gods and white messiahs.
Is it Language? - most 21 century African children cannot speak their mother tongue.
Is it culture? I am sure your children speak with an English accent, init?
Please define AN AFRICAN.

@B118
I did not miss out on the word potential. From your explanation of the word potential, every country on earth has the same potential. But the most important potential is the one we lack - Management and Technological Man power.
It was Management and Technological man power that USA was able to employ to escape colonization by Britain and surpassed her, to become the no 1 nation on earth.

It was Management and Technological Resources that Israel used to turn an open desert into an agricultural exporting country.

It was Management and Technological Resource that made Japan an world industrial power Less that 20 yrs after a devastating war. Same for Germany.

So your use of potentially powerful nation is too general
Re: Is Nigeria Really This Bad? by B118: 9:17pm On Apr 21, 2009
@ wirinet

You seem to be atguing for the sake of winning the arguement so that you're completely missing my point,

i did not describe management and technology as potentials, I'm saying that a country with potential to be powerful just needs good management in order to harness its resources and intellect to develop technologically and in other sense, in the process become powerful.

Countries like England USA fought wars to claim land (history of England and scotland, Texas and mexico wars to claim land, how the man power from the chinese migrant is a vital part of the development of USA e.t.c Even Isreal and palestine were still at it of recent) so don't tell me population or possession of vast Land is not relevant to build-up of power.

Nigeria has, Land, agricultural friendly climate, man-power, mineral resources, potential tourist attractions e.t.c All these in relatively large amounts compared to even some developed coutries of the world, this is what gives it the potential to be powerful. USA for example is dependent on the imports from other countries which is why the financial crisis that started in the USA has spread to the rest of the world because the demand from the major importers has dropped. Ever heard the saying "when the USA coughs, the rest of the world sneezes".

By the way why is it so hard to accept that Nigeria is indeed the giant of Africa (though asleep). Like the other poster suggested, is it the inferiority complex, or just years of brain washing that the western world is superior.

What makes a country a giant of any continent?  Does land, resources and population alone alone make the case? Define the phrase "Sleeping Giant"?
Re: Is Nigeria Really This Bad? by wirinet(m): 10:16pm On Apr 21, 2009
I an sorry to say that you argument does not hold water and the sooner we all realize the truth the better for us.

I am trying to correct the above impressions held by you and our government.

People fought to claim land then because land because the economy then was land based - agriculture and mining. So the richest nations were the ones with the largest land (especially fertile land with mineral deposits) and the richest people were the landlords. But i wonder why most people (including our governments) fail to realize that things have changed.

Why do you think that wars are not fought for territory anymore, it is because land size does not matter much anymore.
A good example is Isreal, their land mass is smaller than most states of Nigeria and is mostly desert couple witha population of about 5 million. But the the state of Israel produces over 50 times what we could produce. Also Switzerland - a mainly rocky mountainous landlocked country with horrible weather and a tiny population to match, is much more developed than us with all our so called resources.

From the beginning of the 20th century Human Resources became the wealth of nations and not Land, and not even population per Se, but highly skilled workers in both technological and managerial sectors. US on realizing this fact encouraged and poached skilled workers from Germany, Israel, Europe, Asia, etc. Even today the western nations are bleeding Africa dry of its only true resource, its manpower, such that we have a shortage of qualified doctors in Nigeria.

Our greatest problem is not corruption per se, but sheer incompetence. That is why why our problem is not financial, because financial problems are easy to solve. But managerial incompetence is very difficult to deal with. You will find out that the management of our most successful companies are Europeans, Indians, Chinese and even Lebanese, while the ones with Nigerian management almost always fail in the long run. Why? - incompetence. Incompetence pervades all sectors, aviation, power, Engineering, Education (heard of the Kwara exams tests for primary school teachers?) etc.

Not only land resource and population determine the strength of a country, I stated this earlier, but u cannot deny the importance of these factors, more important is how they are put to use.

Sleeping Giant in this context is simly a country that is seriously underachieving, do take time to read my last post properly then u'll know what I meant.

Wasn't it but a couple of decades ago that the Naira was equal to the Dollar, compare rates of Migration a few decades ago to the present day, Nigeria before and after the oil boom. Nigeria was Never so bad it was just some bad decisions and mismanagement along the way.

If Nigerians can't be enthusiastic about Nigeria we can all go ahead and wallow in hopelessness.

First of all I have lived in Lagos myself for 7 years from the early 80s to the late 80s as a teenager, then I returned to England. You are completely wrong when you say:  "the tribalism we experience here is worse than the racism you can ever experience there"; for example, you can learn Yoruba, change your name and nobody would know you are from the Delta - as a result you would experience zero prejudice.  But in England once you are Black that it everything bad is associated with you: AIDs, Crime, dirty, rude, due to institutional racism.  However you are taliking to a member of the already converted club. I have a computer science degree from UCL (in the top 5 best universities in the UK out of 100 universities), and its common knowledge that 9 in 10 applications are declined  for such a place. So you are right there are opportunities beyond ones wildest dreams however, why dose one have to be phenomenal as a black man to succeed? People who have an inferiority complex are defensive and would not give the kind of response I am offering.  On top of all of that I decided to start my own software business and I named it KINIUN (Lion in Yoruba), so if that dose not proove that I DO NOT have an inferiority complex what dose?

Clothes? I think you are wrong, dose the president wear a shirt and trousers? no, it depends on the ethnicity. And who cares where the material is manufactured?
The fact is pretty much everything is manufactured in China nowadays due to their comparative advantage when it comes to labour costs and commercial infrastructure.
Any manufacturer at this present moment in time would relocate to China if that firm wants to maximize profits.

Language? Again I disagree, Most hausa can't speak English and everyone in my family could speak the Yoruba language so you cannot generalize - so gbo nkoti mon so?

Culture? Well, like I said I was born and bred in England but I can still speak my language and I know my History.

Okay, Whats an African? Well thats a tough question (I would be interested to hear your definition), my simplistic answer would be a person with dark brown skin and wooly hair. The fact is North Africans identify themselves as Arabs - and so do I, its just that African leaders are so stupid they allow them to be a member of the AU. So, my answer is we have to show the world what an African is by showing that we have our own culture, language, food, music (which is awful nowadays) and RELIGION and TECHNOLOGY - AFRICANISM!

The reason why I say that you have an inferiority complex is because you keep re-enforcing the western lies I hear on BBC and CNN on a daily basis. Slavery lasted for 400 years, but Mental slavery is what exists today. Are you telling me that tommorow if you went to a Millionaire from another ethnic group, and prposed a business plan worth tens of millions of dollars he would say:  "Sorry, You are not from the right ethnic group sorry I don't want to make any more money"? No! he would call you a brother, hug you and say lets do it as quick as possible! So look past other peoples petiness and rise up!  All of the problems in Nigeria are business opportunities like security, food, education, technology, energy etc.  For example look at the billionaires Otedola, Adenuga and Dangote, both have become wealthy through the problems of Nigeria:

Otedola - exploits the lack of Electricity
Adenuga - exploited the lack of communication infrastructure
Dangote - exploits everything! mainly cement

And before you say that Obasanjo helped them - thats the way the world works! Like George Bush started a war and owned shares in bullet and millitary companies that supplied the U.S army, and his vice president Cheney was Chairman of the company that won a multi-billion contract to clean up the mess! All politicians are corrupt, its just that Nigerian politicians are corrupt beyond the nations means. So you should be looking at the opportunities and coming up with solutions, rather than regurgitating the dull predictions of the western media and writers who constantly twist history to the detriment of the African continent.

Kobojunkie:

You asked: What makes a country a giant of any continent? Does land, resources and population alone alone make the case? Define the phrase "Sleeping Giant"?

No, of course not, but they are the basic ingredients for greatness! B118 emphasized the word "potential" but I think a pessimistic outlook is making that word invisible at present. A high population means chaeper labour and a naturally large Army; but most importantly it means a large supply of the most precious resource on this planet - HUMAN RESOURCES. Natural Resources and land are the finite, scarce factors of production, if a nation has ample supply of both it should be more independent. And lastly, A large population means a large market! For example globalcom has more

The British wanted All the areas around the Niger river (Niger -> Area = Nigeria) to be a nice neat bundle so they could exploit the resources much more easily by dealing with one set of leaders - and to save money after the second world war. Hence, Nigeria to the west is land for extracting raw materials to make them richer, for selfish reasons, Nigerian leaders continue this tradition to enrich themselves and give the oyinbos what they want. For example Globalcom has over 30 million subscribers in Nigeria, this is only possible because of the large population.

When Nigerians become more enterprising and realise that they can solve their own problems through their intellect, then the Giant will awaken and mineral extraction will be replaced with Nigerian Hitec multinationals, that make the income generated from mineral extracion look like peanuts.

B118:

@ wirinet
You seem to be atguing for the sake of winning the arguement so that you're completely missing my point,
i did not describe management and technology as potentials, I'm saying that a country with potential to be powerful just needs good management in order to harness its resources and intellect to develop technologically and in other sense, in the process become powerful.
Giving what we know now, one could argue that just about any country out there has potential to be powerful then. So the claim that Nigeria is potentially powerful becomes meaningless.

B118:

Countries like England USA fought wars to claim land (history of England and scotland, Texas and mexico wars to claim land, how the man power from the chinese migrant is a vital part of the development of USA e.t.c Even Isreal and palestine were still at it of recent) so don't tell me population or possession of vast Land is not relevant to build-up of power.
But, these countries exercised power before they claimed lands and fought wars, not after.  The millions of Immigrants to America were definitely vital to its development but the push towards development started long before those immigrants came in.
I am not exactly what your point is with the above statement.  In the case of America, I would say land and resources came as a result of power, not before.  I believe the same applies to Britain
B118:

Nigeria has, Land, agricultural friendly climate, man-power, mineral resources, potential tourist attractions e.t.c  All these in relatively large amounts compared to even some developed coutries of the world, this is what gives it the potential to be powerful.
USA for example is dependent on the imports from other countries which is why the financial crisis that started in the USA has spread to the rest of the world because the demand from the major importers has dropped. Ever heard the saying "when the USA coughs, the rest of the world sneezes".
I still do not get your point here.
B118:

By the way why is it so hard to accept that Nigeria is indeed the giant of Africa (though asleep). Like the other poster suggested, is it the inferiority complex, or just years of brain washing that the western world is superior.
If Nigerians can't be enthusiastic about Nigeria we can all go ahead and wallow in hopelessness.
Well, I am guessing this last part is for those you consider to have some issue with complex , are brainwashed and maybe feel the situation is hopeless. So I guess, there is no need for me to respond to all that there as it does not apply to me.  I would however like for you to better explain yourself.  It is  not hard to accept per say that a country could be a sleeping giant, what I do not understand though is why you believe Nigeria is one of them.

OK, but all the resources and man power has yet to produce a formidable giant of Nigeria for decades now. I mean it is not as if these resources have not been there from the beginning; they did not just show up over night or something.  Just wanted to make sure we understood that, at least.

Of what essence is the above to this?

linxon:

So, you believe that Nigerians, do not right now, know they can solve their problems by applying intellectual know how? Does that sound right to you? That all the professors and PHDS we have in that country have yet to figure out that the problems in that country can be solved this way?

By the way, you still have yet to explain the phrase “Sleeping Giant” and what context it could be applied to Nigeria. The verb “Sleeping” points to some form of inaction. Nigeria and Nigerians are wide awake and acting; only that most our actions are applied in a manner that continues to negatively affect our future in the world. So how can we be “Sleeping” when we are wide awake and depleting our resources?
