Social critic and public commentator, Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto has counseled Nigerians to hold back from believing President Muhammadu Buhari is the “anointed messiah,” warning that his previous attempt at fighting corruption during the military era eventually led to him “losing his job.”

Kukah expressed this pessimism while speaking as a guest during the Independence Anniversary programme The Platform on the topic “Nigeria: Euphoria, Hysteria and Dementia, Still a long walk to freedom,” at the Covenant Christian Centre in Iganmu Lagos.

“I believe Buhari is not a new kid on the block, he’s been there before. He fought corruption and lost his job, nobody protested in support of General Buhari for losing his job for fighting corruption back then.

“Corruption is celebrated in Nigeria because most people who steal claim to do it for a righteous cause.

“It is all right that we are celebrating Buhari, and we must celebrate him but I think Buhari must also know and I believe he knows that we cannot fold our arms and hope that a nation that is so intellectually lazy, simply wishes for a messiah.

“An intellectually lazy man looks up to a Messiah they don’t know what he looks like to rescue them. We are looking for facilitators and we not looking for leaders and most of us are better than those who have been our leaders.”

Kukah also dispelled insinuations that getting an honest leader could serve as a prerequisite for Nigerian development regardless of weak institutions. He added that there have never been any established relationships between human goodness and capacity to deliver on good governance.

“I think the critical mistake we are making is that we think that governing Nigeria is about good men and good women or it is about hold men and holy women.

“There isn’t a direct correlation between human goodness and capacity to govern, in Nigeria we should not be talking about leaders. I watched him on channels when this program was aired, he is simply amazing! He said the truth and he talks from experience. He is indeed a leader not those packaged pretenders and dullards!

Apparently, he had to deliver a speech that was in consonant with the topic of the lecture.

I agree that government should be of LAWS rather than of MEN. But, then you good and Patriotic men to build institutions to make and enforce the laws. Unpatriotic and evil men will only seek to make poor laws and weaken available institutions so they can't enforce the laws.

That is why Buhari is the closest thing to a "Messiah" right now. His austere and altruistic lifestyle means he is not the for personal gain but to return back sanity to reckless system.
