VcStunner: Good day . I am so sorry i would not know much about about the challenges of Nigerian students except for Strikes and poor educational infrastructure. If this happens to be your prospective research topic, my advice would be keep it brief and no big big grammars. Keep your English simple and straight to the point . Most Importantly make use of graphical aids such as graphs, charts, tables, etc. Graphical aids should be at least 70 percent of your write up while the other 30 percent should be simple English and straight to the point. I will need guidance house. I am currently in touch with a Professor and it looks he will accept to supervise me but there’s no funding. I wouldn’t be able to apply for MEXT because my documents are not ready. I am thinking of self funding but my budget is just 2m for tuition. Their school website shows 880,000 yen but it’s looks confusing. Is it feasible? How do I get the actual tuition fee? Can I work while schooling? |

donfelix4sure: Have you checked any other scholarship? Not MEXT. But other scholarship? |
Re: Japanese Visa And Travelling To Japan by Gerrard59(m): 2:16pm On May 08, 2022 |
donfelix4sure: Looks like you applied to a public or private university. Well, unless you have plenty of money or got MEXT (the only realistic and encompassing scholarship a Nigerian living in Nigeria can apply for), it's pointless applying to a public or private university. Looking at how much you have, you are better off applying to a national university, preferably outside the Kanto-Kansai regions. TIP: Target national universities in Hokkaido prefecture. Going forward, the truth is: you don't have the money to fund your studies in Japan as you will be required by the university to present an account showing you can fund your living expenses for the next two years in that particular city the university is located. If it's in Tokyo, on average, you will be required to spend at least ¥100K per month X 12 months. Note: this does not include your tuition fees o. Yes, you can work while schooling, just that you get fewer student jobs outside the major cities. I don't know about public or private universities but in national universities, you pay tuition fees per semester not the whole year. So, divide the tuition fees by 2, that's what you will pay for your first semester. On the other hand, there are many scholarships available for privately funded students when you get admitted. You could win many scholarships depending on your grades, calibre of university (many scholarships exist in Imperial universities and those top private universities such as Waseda and Keio) and supervisor's support the moment you gain admission, which will greatly reduce your living costs. Now, what you should do is to ensure you can provide the naira equivalent of your living expenses (the more expensive a city is, the higher your naira should be. Which means no city's immigration bureau other than Tokyo will require more than ¥100K per month X 12 months) for immigration authorities as that's a prerequisite to be issued the certificate of eligibility, without the COE, you cannot be issued a Japanese visa. 4 Likes |

peacefull: MEXT is the only realistic scholarship to apply as a Nigerian living in Nigeria. |
Re: Japanese Visa And Travelling To Japan by donfelix4sure(m): 3:47pm On May 08, 2022 |
Gerrard59: Well detailed. Thank you for taking time to write this. I am actively searching for cheaper schools. It’s actually Hiroshima University that I have made contact with a potential supervisor. Though I am still searching and sending cold-emails. |

Gerrard59: Really? Very difficult to get other scholarship? |
Re: Japanese Visa And Travelling To Japan by Gerrard59(m): 5:29pm On May 08, 2022 |
donfelix4sure: The money required for living expenses will be lower than say Tohoku or Kyoto. But I am still surprised at the fee considering it is a national university. Are you applying for a law or medical program? You should ensure the funds are available (at least 6M naira since it is outside the Kanto-Kansai regions) rather than look for more schools. The koko is the funds. Scholarships while in Nigeria are very very few 1 Like |

Gerrard59: I am actually applying for PhD aquaculture under basic biology. I am not too sure of the tuition because their website self dey complicated. I have written to their student support service in that department for exact tuition for my desired program. I am even confused on what to write back to the potential supervisor as a follow up mail because I don’t want him to see me like unserious person. I will be doing a follow mail tomorrow shall. Or is it okay to ask him for idea of possible tuition since I am thinking of self funding? 6m much ooo for proof of fund. |
Re: Japanese Visa And Travelling To Japan by Gerrard59(m): 12:01am On May 09, 2022 |
donfelix4sure: No wonder. If so, then I will advise you shelve the idea of doing PhD in Japan. There are few scholarships for those who are outside Japan to fund their graduate studies - most of which are for masters and largely aimed at Asian students esp those from South East Asia. No where in the developed world do students fund their PhD research, no one does it. It's either scholarship from the school/private organisation, loan from the government or funded by the department. Yes, you should ask him for funding as you are applying for a PhD program. Alternatively, you should check for funded PhD programmes at RIKEN and JSPS. Those places are where research jobs (PhD, postdoc and assistant professorships) are posted. In there, you can directly apply for PhD positions as they are funded in part by the government or the professor has research grants. But say you want to fund yourself? Nah. It's not possible. In fact, it's ill-advised. The 6M naira is for a master program. A PhD program will require at least 10 - 12M naira to present to immigration authorities. To explain the impossibility, check those who japa'd to the UK for further studies (self funding), which of them are doing a PhD? The other option (best in my opinion) is to use the funds you have now in preparing for PhD applications to schools in the United States. You have greater chances of getting sponsored to the US while in Nigeria than applying to Japanese universities for your PhD. I'm being very realistic here. You might want to ask, so how do foreign students get sponsored for their PhDs apart from MEXT and JSPS? Answer: they get funded by private organisations (scholarships) or the professor while finishing their MSc in Japan or their undergraduate universities have exchange relationships with Japanese universities. There are many scholarships available while in Japan but very few while outside the country. Alternatively, if you are still young and/or want to relish the Japanese experience, you apply for another masters. It's not overlooked but that is where you will be required to provide an account statement with at least 6M naira. 4 Likes |

Gerrard59: Oh! I understand now! I think so. Maybe very few. I checked JASSO and JPSS website about scholarships for international students. I saw many many. But most of condition is live in Japan. I will check that website! Thank you so much! I appreciate you! |

Gerrard59: Well understood. I really appreciate your response. I think I will go with this other option of using the available funds to prepare for PhD applications to schools in the United States. It’s cool. Thank you once again for your time. |
