Mary’s Pathetic Cry, “They Have Taken My Lord…” Prevailing Today in the body of Christ
Rev. Br. Kenneth Alamezie, BSS
“Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed. For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. Then the disciples went away again unto their own home. But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre, And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my LORD, and I know not where they have laid him. And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. “(Jn 20:8-14)
The Scripture above is part of the resurrection account of John. The beloved and love disciple is recounting here what transpired at the tomb site of Jesus upon their arrival there--him and peter-- which in the first place was necessitated by the information of our Lord’s missing body, by the contemplative passionate lady, Mary.
Though he, John, said there, that they went in and saw, and believed, yet he was very careful not to hide the very fact that prior to that incident, for lack of knowledge of Scriptural prophecies concerning the messiah’s fate and his consequent resurrection from the dead (Ps 16 vs 10), they had scarcely taken to heart His words to them that he was going to rise again from the dead: “For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.” Perhaps Mary never did as well. At least we can tell from her words. But love answers all things.
Though Mary was nowhere close to what we’d call today ‘a bible scholar’, yet she was the first to discover the truth that even the so-called teachers of the law of that era, just as we have around, today, some of their brothers who wouldn’t care to tell even the birds of the air of what high-ranking theologians they are and how vast their knowledge in bible exposition, could not understand, even at their paraded versatility and towering knowledge of Scripture. Recall their response to the man born blind, prior to his expulsion from the synagogue, “you were born a sinner and now ‘you teach us’!” (Jn 9:34)
Ardent love for Rabboni gave Mary the advantage she enjoys today over the eleven (remember the betrayer had sent himself to the hangman’s gallows) as being the first to see the risen Lord…and also being, if you like, an apostle to the apostles. Not even the beloved disciple could equal her in Love for the Master. And the same applies today: fervent love for the crucified Lord Jesus Christ proves to be the only solution to identifying Him and his voice—his true message--in this era of incessant multiplication of messiahs, widespread distortion of the truth/teachings about the true Messiah, and gross misrepresentation of His salvific mission’s objective to humanity.
As foretold, many are now out there preaching another jesus that is very much poles apart from the Crucified Jesus CHRIST of NAZARETH. Thus Mary’s agonizing response, “they have taken my Lord and I do not know where they have laid him” has become the cry of honest seekers of the TRUTH.
There is no doubt history is going to repeat itself again, as has always being the case. For, like Mary whom we’re told refused to hasten off with others, (in view of happenings today you could substitute with the term 'joining the crowd') "But Mary stood without (alone) at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre", but with fervent love and holy curiosity was determined to find the One who gave her life meaning and beauty, and which she did. Those who’ll find the true Christ, who’ll be able to identify His real voice—his true message—from among many other lookalike voices echoing from almost every direction now, are those who are prepared to weep in honest search of the Truth, in prayer; those who’re ready to stroll that lonely but richly rewarding pathway of holiness, though greatly abhorred by many at present, savoring the scriptures as they walk. The hasteners, the gulp-it-all believers, yes, I mean those Christians who’d never care to discern the scrap sold them in the place of genuine Gospel message, by some disgruntled elements, sons of Korah who’ve invaded the body of Christ like the biblical locusts and canker worms, may not escape being poisoned and deceived into believing this crucifixion-scared superstar of a messiah being preached in many churches. God willing, in the coming editions, we’ll try to x-ray some of these foreign jesuses these entertainers are presenting us with, and their messages. God bless you!
