On the plight of Nigerians abroad tribune

Monday, April 27, 2009

I read with sympathy the news item reported by some newspapers recently about the passionate letters written to Senate President, David Mark, on the plight of some Nigerians abroad.

The first letter was by some concerned Nigerians in relation to the killing of Nigerians in Equatorial Guinea. They claimed that there were many other Nigerians languishing in that country’s jails for no just cause.

Some Nigerian businessmen appealed to the Nigerian government to intervene to secure the release of their ships and boats which were detained unwarrantedly by the government of Equatorial Guinea.

The second letter to Mark was about the Somali pirates who held captive, since August 2008, 10 Nigerians who were on their legitimate duty from Saudi Arabia where they had gone to acquire a new ship for their employers, ESL Integrated Services Limited.

These victims have been subjected to shabby treatment ranging from lack of medical attention to starvation.

But the Nigerian government has failed to intervene and secure the release of these Nigerians from their captors unlike China, France, Spain, Ukraine and the United States, who had at one time or the other negotiated for the release of their nationals who were held hostage by the same Somali pirates.

Unfortunately, the same Nigerian government would enter into negotiation with the captors’ officials here in Nigeria.

The Federal Government of Nigeria often feels unconcerned about the plights of Nigerians in the diaspora.

The question is, do we still have a Ministry of Foreign Affairs? If we do, then one expects to hear from them on these matters. Nigerians must not continue to suffer these inhuman treatments.
