The Senate yesterday invited three ministerial nominees into their chamber for grilling. Khadija Bukka Abba, Claudius Daramola and Barrister Adebayo Shittu were given time to share their experiences and voice their opinions on different subjects. Adebayo Shittu who hails from Oyo state did nothing to distinguish himself as Nigerians voiced their disappointment on his nomination. Shittu, a former member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, former Commissioner for Information, Culture and Home Affairs, former Attorney General and Oyo State Commissioner for Justice and former gubernatorial contender in the State was neither clear nor articulate in his presentation.



The screening, which was broadcasted live on national television, gave Shittu an opportunity to give his professional opinion on pressing national but his answers made many to question why President Buhari considered him for the job in the first place. Asked about the activities of Boko Haram terrorist group, Shittu said: “I cannot publicly comment on Boko Haram; I still have a family to care of. So anybody that wants to live will not condemn that faceless group publicly.” Mr. Shittu, who is also a lawyer and an Islamic scholar, insisted, however that the activities of the sect negate Islamic Principle. He finally hinted that religious officers should be given regular stipends by the government so that they can moralize our society.

Nigerians on the other hand were furious with his opinions. Many of them, in anguish called Mr. Shittu a joker and completely unfit for the job. Following his statement that religious leaders should be paid by Government to moralise society, Ter-Aondo said; “If I hear! that these gods of men, my bad, men of (G)god are not paying tax is enough lost to our nation.” “The stupidity in this statement has cost us lives. Oshey minister of Religious studies.” Boronta argued. To Otunba Yemi Jacobs “one of the greatest undoing of our nation right now is religion, how do you want to pay…”
