A MEDITERRANEAN-style diet could fight dementia by slowing the rate the brain shrinks by five years.

A study indicates eating fruit and veg, fish and olive oil but little red meat or dairy products delays brain cells dying with ageing.
Doctor Yian Gu, of Columbia University, led the US research and said: “People may potentially prevent effects of ageing on the brain simply by following a healthy diet.”

The survey of 674 people was published in journal Neurology.
Dr James Pickett, at the UK’s Alzheimer’s Society, said: “Eating a healthy diet is good for your brain, along with exercising and stopping smoking.”
