Ifon ceramic industry’ll provide 1, 500 jobs, says Ondo govt

The Ondo State Government has said that the Golden Ceramic Products Company, located in Ifon, Ose Local Government Areas of the state, which is being resuscitated, would provide about 1,500 jobs for the unemployed.

The Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Rotimi Adelola, said this, at the weekend, in Akure, while signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), on behalf of the government in collaboration with the Jac-Estee Nigeria Limited.

Adelola disclosed that the 24- year-old, moribund Golden Ceramic Products Limited, would boost income generation for the people and the state as a whole.

He explained that development was part of efforts by the state government to prioritise industrialization, which was included in the “Caring Heart” mantra of the Mimiko government.

“It will aid genuine development of the state economy, and so a need to rejuvenate the industry, which has proved a hard nut to crack for previous administrations”, Adelola said.

Who're the masses?

The folks who ought to be the masses are the ones scrounging for crumbs everywhere and the useful idiots who think flowery words and window-dressing is leadership.

Both the leaders and followers in Nigeria are utter failures. You can't even separate the two.

EoD, No more no less....I'm going to give two examples to illustrate my position that both the leaders & the led deserve each other...

1. I have an aunt who has virtually abandoned her real biz to engage in "area godmother politics", her definition of a "good" leader is how much the said politician is ready to cough up to maintain their loyalty...

She's in her 50's & been in politics since forever, only changes allegiance as belle face, once i was pushed to ask her "infrastructures & good governance nko", she just looked @ me & smiled like i was a mumu & asked if i think Nigeria can ever be great again , said the country is spoilt beyond repair & each man is for himself...

I was hurt beyond words that day & you know why? She & her cohorts are the delegates that choose candidates in primaries... cry

2.A family friend is an engineer in an IOC/NNPC JV, said there was a community development scheme that the IOC was to undertake, refurbishment of classrooms & the small health centre in the community.... He said the project didn't see light of day cos the elders were distinctly split into two groups

Group A, wanted the company to pay them royalty before embarking on a project that is meant to benefit their own community while Group B claimed their own children were no longer of elementary school age & the funds for the said project should be shared to everyone to solve other needs....

He said the oyinbo men just kept asking the naija guys if there is mass insanity that the community need to be tested for cos they just don't get the kind of mentality that inhibits personal progress & development....

I'm disappointed with the slow progress of this admin but I'm still holding on to hope, & on the travel thing, IT IA UNFAIR the position people have taken, it is not like he is on vacation in the carribeans...

Shy, do an analysis of the places he had been to in recent days, they are all important, Gas exporting countries in Iran, Chogm in Malta, Climate change in france have one impact or the other on our policies ..

I believe the new year will come with new things...

90% of the people complaining actually are praying for the failure of the nation to mock the state of the nation...

Crude oil as at yesterday was 44.50$ P.B, no matter what we say or postulate, this nation is a mono exporting one & to diversify won't happen in 6mths, even 12 months is too soon!!!

Skye Bank Launches Online Shop, YesMall

Skye Bank Plc has unveiled an online store for the sale of mainly made-in-Nigeria products and services.

The new online store, called YesMall, offers a unique experience for the bank’s current and prospective SME and retail customers who can buy and sell their products and services from the comfort of their homes by using electronic devices such as phones, tablet, laptop, or desktop. They can also do their transactions by using ATM machines nearest to them.

Speaking during the unveiling of the new online mall in Lagos at the 8th Skye Bank SME seminar series, the group managing director/chief executive officer of Skye Bank Plc, Mr Timothy Oguntayo, said that the bank came up with the platform after noticing that some SME operators find it difficult to sell their goods as most of the finished goods end up as items of inventory in the warehouses. Noting that e-commerce had gained recognition in both national and global trade, Oguntayo said that the bank planned to facilitate the participation of Nigerian SME operators in the global e-commerce sales which is currently estimated at $1.5 trillion.

In addition, he explained that the potential worth of e-commerce in Nigeria, put at an estimated $10 billion per annum, offers a huge opportunity for discerning businesses to explore and tap into to grow their market share.

“Available statistics show that the e-commerce sector in Nigeria currently boasts of about 300,000 online orders daily. Our desire at Skye Bank is to substantially grow these figures and make e-commerce the new trade highway in Nigeria,” he said.

WARACAKE’S AMBITION TO BE THE “AMAZON OF CAKES” IN NIGERIA

Tunde Ayilara is the founder of Waracake. Alongside 3 other co-founders, he is making “cake” business happen with ease in the Nigerian eCommerce scene. “We saw the opportunity in the space, and it was also based on a personal experience,” says Ayilara.

He sure has eyes that identify an opportunity at the quickest uptake.

Waracake is an offshoot of a business run during university days at OAU around 2012, which has overtime pivoted into what it is today. The word “Waracake” is a fusion of the Yoruba language expression “Wara”, meaning “come and buy” and “cake”.
Waracake is a two-sided cake marketplace for retailers and consumers. For the retailers’ part, most of whom are women that lack the tech savviness to bring their business online, Waracake provides the much needed tech support to push their cake to the market and as such, helps them earn more income.

The model, which has been run for a little over a year, is not just only making its clients (customers and cake merchants) satisfied, but also generating some significant amount of income to sustain itself. While a Waracake model appeals the minds of the customers by offering the comfort of ordering cakes online from within the confines of their homes and also ensuring prompt home deliveries, it ensures the retailers (Cake vendors) on the other hand find their satisfaction in a ready market for their cakes, a loosened competitive pressure (since it has a handful of retailers signed under its platform) and a zero cost of creating awareness for their product — with it’s only pressure bordering around constantly meeting up with quality cake production.

The platform offers the flexibility of customers’ order/selection of cakes from its inventory, and also allow customers to be able to give specifications, rather than limiting the mode of operation to one particular aspect.

“We are in the right direction”, says Ayilara, “we are basically learning everyday, and we’ve been able to learn ways by which we can tweak our model to improve our performance”

Prospects

Waracake is on a mission to becoming the “Amazon of Cakes” in Nigeria, and wouldn’t stop delivering delicious baskets. It’s customers patronage, which spreads across the borders of the country is a testament of its desire of excluding no one from having a fair share of its attractive package. According to Ayilara, Waracake sees every customer as a potential customer.

Ayilara tells us they even handle deliverys from Nigerians in diaspora; from countries like UK, USA, Switzerland etc.

“We get a lot of orders from Nigerians in diaspora. We get a lot of online orders from those people more compared to people who actually stay in Nigeria”

Waracake is indeed out there to provide cake solutions that have never been experienced. It would be having it’s next cake fair in Lagos and Abuja in early 2016.

All said and done, thank you Tunde Ayilara for reminding everyone out there that it’s a man’s world afterall. And what a woman can do, a man can do better.

Olufunmilayo Olopade: Gifted Oncologist

A woman of substance, Dr Olufunmilayo Olopade is known both in the diaspora and at home for her numerous accomplishments in the medical field, particularly as an Oncologist. A sector known for its few females, she has simply engraved her name in the heart of medical achievements as not only an expert in cancer risk assessment and treatment for several aggressive types of breast cancer, but has equally proved her worth through the attainment of several awards and honours. Olopade at the height of her career was appointed by the President of the United States, Barack Obama to the National Cancer Advisory Board.

This remarkable woman was born in 1957 in Nigeria. Daughter of an Anglican Minister, Dr Olopade is the fifth born of her parents out of six children. Seeing as doctors where scarce in the Nigerian villages where she was raised, her parents decided to train one of their children to become a doctor. Dr Olopade had been the first to show interest in the practice, which encouraged her parents.

Dr Olopade attended the Medical School at University of Ibadan, where she graduated with an MD in 1980. She was a Medical officer at the Nigerian Navy Hospital in Lagos for her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, before going abroad for internship, serving as a medicine intern at Cook County Hospital, Chicago Illinois from 1983 to 1984. She equally became an internal medicine resident at Cook County Hospital from 1984 to 1986. Again Dr Olopade became chief resident at same hospital from 1986 to 1987, she received a post-doctoral fellow in hematology/oncology, at the University of Chicago, from 1987 to 1991 and was assistant professor of hematology/oncology at Pritzker School of Medicine, University of Chicago, from 1991 to 2002.

Progressively, Dr Olopade realised becoming a director at the Cancer Risk Clinic at the University of Chicago Hospitals in 1992, and an associate professor of medicine, University of Chicago in 2002. She did not stop there, but also became professor of medicine and human genetics, University of Chicago, in the early 2000s.

The Cancer Risk Clinic has demonstrated expertise in treating high-risk cancer patients and also conducts studies on the disease, focusing on genetics. It was during her work here that Dr Olopade became conscious that the African-American women she treated for breast cancer seemed much younger than other sufferers of the disease. Going to Nigeria for a niece’s wedding, she noticed same at a breast cancer clinic she visited, most of the breast cancer patients were young in their 20s, 30s and 40s while caucasian women who had the disease where in their 50s or 60s after menopause.

Dr Olopade became intent on researching the reason why this was so and how to come about a preventive. Not resting on her laurels, she worked extensively on clinical work surrounding the role of the mutations in two genes namely, BRCA1 and BRCA2 in the occurrence of breast cancer in women of African descent occurred in patients with early onset breast cancer. This continuing study, which commenced in 2003, has looked at cancer patients in Nigeria and Senegal. Investigative results have produced new, ground-breaking methods to treating breast cancer in this population. Dr Olopade is one of four main investigators involved in the study.

She has developed innovative management procedures centred on an understanding of the altered genes in individual patients and emphasises on comprehensive risk reducing plans and prevention in high-risk populations, as well as previous detection through advanced imaging technologies.

Her memberships include; American Association for Cancer Research, American Board of Internal Medicine, American Association for the Advancement of Science American College of Physicians, American Philosophical Society , American Society for Clinical Investigation, American Society for Preventative Oncology ,American Society of Breast Disease, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Hematology , Association of American Professors, Human Genome Organisation, Institute of Medicine , National Cancer Advisory Board, Nigerian Medical Association, Women in Cancer Research board, Y-Me National Breast Cancer Organisation

Dr Olopade’s Awards include; Nigerian Federal Government Merit Award, 1975; Nigerian Medical Association Award for Excellence in Paediatrics, 1978; Nigerian Medical Association Award for Excellence in Medicine, 1980; University of Ibadan College of Medicine Faculty Prize, 1980; University of Ibadan College of Medicine departmental prizes in paediatrics, medicine, and surgery, 1980; University of Ibadan Sir Samuel Manuwa Gold Medal for Excellence in the Clinical Sciences, 1980; Association for Brain Tumor Research/Ellen Ruth Lebow Fellowship, 1990; American Society for Clinical Oncology Young Investigator Award, 1991; James S. McDonnell Foundation Scholar Award, 1992; Doris Duke Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award, 2000; Phenomenal Woman Award for work within the African-American community, 2003; Access Community Network’s Heroes in Healthcare Award, 2005; MacArthur Fellow, 2005.

A dynamic doctor, Olopade is happily married to a physician, Christopher Sola Olopade. They have two daughters and a son.
