Woman, 58, Dies While Queuing For Fuel by georgecso(m): 7:30am On May 05, 2009
A 58 year old woman, Mrs Esther Ladi Abubakar who served with the Niger State Ministry of Health before her recent retirement died yesterday while waiting to buy fuel at the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Mega Station in Minna.

Our Correspondent gathered that the woman who was on the queue for more than four hours without success was about to buy from black marketers when she collapsed and died. According to a nephew of the deceased, Humpani Bahago, people crowded the car but did not try to help because they were scared.

You extracted the wrong lesson from that article.
There will ALWAYS be queues wherever there are scarce goods. The main message is this:

Stop talking about leaders all the time. Why could no one screw up the courage to help a fellow human being in a life and death situation?

if they help, Police(which is control by the 'bad' leaders) would say you kill the woman.

Why should a commodity be scarce in a country that is a world major producer of oil.

It will not be wrong/abnormal if we start queuing up for Garri.

You didn't address the subject on ground, instead you are talking about another thang.
Can't you think?
Is it normal we have fuel scarcity in this country.even with all the said rebranding, vision 2020.
Refineries=0

Bros ask him abeg. texazzpete says it is normal to struggle for Petrol and its not the government fault. Just imagine queue of petrol in Saudi Arabia, Libya or Venezuella.

And i think you've missed my point.
There aren't always fuel queues, but Nigerians are always afraid to help out even in life and death situations.
I'm not trying to gloss over fuel queues, or gloss over the fact that there is massive scope for improvement. However it is VERY important to point out gaps in the Nigerian psyche, especially since we delight in always pointing accusing fingers at the Government alone.

Macteejay2:

because we do not combust crude oil in our Internal Combustion engines.  grin

When the end result may be saving a human being's life, isn't it worth it to be quizzed by the police?
Why would you be accused of killing the woman if her life is saved?
Many Nigerians leave gravely injured accident victims that can be saved by the roadside simply because of lack of personal courage!

The message i wanted to extract was that so often, we fail to do our part.

femzy:

Can't you think?

Easy on the insults, friend. There's no point in riling me up  grin

Kindly point out where i made the above statement.
Where did i absolve the government of all blame? I said there would be long queues where goods are scarce. Scarcity of fuel is not new in Nigeria.
There's no scarcity of refined petroleum products in the countries you mentioned, hence no queues.

The main point of your article is that someone died. That person could easily have died anywhere else as it's very she lacked fitness. However, it's pertinent to note that she may not have died if people around had helped her.

if she had died while in a visa queue, what would you have blamed?

@texazzpete
Please tell me why the leaders are not to be blame for fuel scarcity! If they are not to be blame as u pointed out for the present fuel situation , then there is failure of good leadership in our beloved country

Did i ever tell you that our leaders are not to blame for some fuel scarcity?
however, the striking tanker drivers and the fuel marketers that hoard petrol, are they our leaders also?

I'll wholeheartedly blame the government because its only in this country that someone will give a tesmony in the church for simply securing a visa. Have u ever see ppl queuing up for days to secure US/UK visa in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Libya,Britain,or Sweden.

Are there that many scammers and fraudsters trying to forge visa documents in those countries?

If you want to address the fuel shortage, address the fuel shortage and don't pin someone's death against it.

A woman died while queuing for fuel, so what? Not to belittle her death or anything but she could have died while eating bread and akara as well.

What she needs is an autopsy not all the barking down the wrong stumps thats being displayed here.

My point exactly!
She may well have been saved if ordinary Nigerians could have had the courage to perform basic first aid.

If she wasnt queuing for a commodity that should be readily available, her death could have been averted . . .even a first aid would not have been needed.
I'm not blaming the government. Just my 2 cents.

People are not dying from queuing for oil alone . . .

Spoke with naija last night, and was informed before this incident came to light here (i.e. this forum) today

that OAPs (i.e. Old Age Pensioners) are left standing in the scorching sun for hours in a queue to pick up their pension entitlements

Due to the prolong wait in the queue and exposure to the sun, at least five elderly people died
Sad, very sad: Someone's pappy and/or big momma

what pains me is that we are very quick to point accusing fingers at government anytime something bad happen, even politicians will point accusing finger at govt, the govt will even point accusing finger at govt, and the truth is that the govt is a faceless individual, it is nobody becuase all of us are govt.
we dont think that our little actions contribute to the large collosal misfortunes that happens everyday- we should all be bold enough to own up to our actions and inactions and not blaming the faceless govt for it!!! we all contribute to the mess and until each one of us changes our approach to one another, to the "so-called" govt facilities etc, we will always moan about it. A lot of reasons could be said to accountable for ladies' death, bad roads, bad health care, people suffocating here, her own personal troubles and pressure (independently of any govt) etc.
Dont just blindly point accusing fingers to govt coz no matter how we look at it, we are part of the problem, and so, we must change to be part of the solutions too

EXACTLY!
On the way to my office this morning, the roads were blocked with vehicles. People has formed 4 lanes on a 2-lane road, blocking oncoming traffic and making the situation extremely chaotic. Why argue that the Government must build more roads and bridges whereas the existing ones are rendered impassable due to the actions of stupid and impatient Nigerians?

As a tax payer, i easily blame NEPA for not providing power. At the same time i'd be silly not to blame the millions of Nigerians that do not pay NEPA bills, that rely on illegal connections to tap electricity. I also will heap a hefty portion of the blame on those millitants that routinely blow up gas pipelines, reducing the feedstock to our gas powered generating plants. And these are ordinary Nigerians, not our 'leaders'.

Does anyone need to be taught before they can do some sort of first aid?
Doesn't everyone know how to attempt to stop bleeding? or if you see someone choking, doesn't native intelligence tell us to loosen tight clothing or to provide enough air for breathing?

You cannot make an assumption based on limited facts. How do you know that some people there had not had some form of basic first aid training? I myself have had some first aid training in the past.
All we know is that people (ordinary Nigerians, not leaders) saw a dying person and were too lily-livered to do anything about it.

busi-bodi:

Dont touch injured or dying person before you accused of using JUJU.

This shows why my argument is needed. What is the point moaning about the number of road accidents and the quality of roads when ordinary Nigerians are unwilling to do their bit to prevent casualties?
This accusation of Juju, where does it come from? our leaders?

That's why i used the term 'courage'. When you weigh whatever trials you may face with the fact that you may have just saved the life of a breadwinner/mother/grandmother, what comes tops?

i don't fuly agree with u. yes she could have died somewhere else and from something else, but sitting under the scorching minna heat for four hours and they probably told her it was finished just when it got to her turn, could have had a major contribution to her death.

there you go.

1. the people copy the govt who regular do this everyday.

2. did govt provide proper process for driver-license and driver training?

3. did govt provide other forms of transport so everybody do not have to drive?

4. are there street address to track a car plate number to owner in case you need to be punished?

see the big picture. these are just affter effect of bad govt.
