Egyptian air traffic control lost contact with a civilian airliner carrying more than 220 people shortly after it took off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to head to Russia, aviation sources said on Saturday.

The sources said the passenger plane was mainly carrying Russian tourists and that a search was underway.

Security sources in the Sinai Peninsula confirmed reports that an aircraft was missing.

There are various conflicting reports over where the aircraft lost contact with air traffic controllers.

According to Russian news agencies, the aircraft was an Airbus A-321 operated by Kogalymavia Aircraft.

The Egyptian prime minister Sharif Ismail said: 'Russian civilian plane... crashed in the central Sinai.'

His office confirmed that a cabinet level crisis committee has been established to deal with the crisis.

It is understood that the aircraft had just taken off on a four-hour flight to St Petersburg when it went missing shortly after take off.

The Airbus A321-231 is believed to have been manufactured in 1997 and is owned by a Dublin-based company.

Egypt's ministry of civil aviation says it lost contact with a Russian aircraft carrying 217 passengers and seven crew members over the Sinai peninsula, according to Egypt's state-run news agency.

The flight took off from Sinai's Sharm el-Sheikh, a popular destination for Russian tourists, at 5.51am local time and disappeared from radar screens 23 minutes after take-off, a statement carried by the MENA agency said.

It said the plane was bound for St Petersburg in Russia and a search and rescue team is looking for the plane.

Earlier in the day, an Egyptian official with the government's incidents committee told local media that the plane had briefly lost contact and was now safely in Turkish airspace.

The aircraft is believed to have crashed in a mountainous area. Reports suggest that the aircraft suffered a technical problem shortly after takeoff with the captain requesting permission to return to the airport.

Any Russian who goes to Egypt for a vacation while Russia is bombing the hell out of some muslim fanatics is a total idiot. And any pilot who disregards Notams (Notices for airmen) regarding terrorist infested Sinai is simply a reckless fool. Do you know how easy it is for ISIS, Al Nusra, or whatever other terrorist to work as a baggage handler at that airport? Or a fueler? Or an aircraft toilet handler? Russia is at war with them and some stupid Russian rich dumbells fly to lay down on the Red see resort beach and order drinks shouting at towelheads around whose only dream is to slit their throats while they sleep. What were those people thinking?
