While it’s not news that Mtn has agreed to pay they N1.04trn fine meted out to them by the Nigerian government for failing to meet up to the deadline of the SIM registration exercise, which was considered not just another default but, rather a threat to the National security of the country.



Subscribers in Nigeria can at least afford to smile again, with the knowledge that even the “rich also cry”, having been victims to actions that has lead to massive exploitation by mobile operators on their unsuspecting subscribers over the years.

The repercussions of a fine so huge, some might even say small depending on what side of the fence you are standing on, has shaken the foundation of the “LARGEST MOBILE NETWORK OPERATOR” in the country so much, that trading in Johannesberg Stock Exchange in MTN shares has stopped presently. It could also be as result of reports of insider trading or a combination of both, whatever the case, dark clouds are hovering over the once peaceful and flourishing “Yhello! Kingdom”.

Closer to home, more lobbying to steer the tide or cushion the impact of the fine has yielded little success. Definitely heads will roll in the upper and mid level echelons of management, how this will trickle down to those who have felt the pinch over the years, time will tell. For now, we wait and watch with bated breath as these juggernauts square off against each other, while their fellow mobile operators must be looking over their shoulders wondering just “when” and not if, their time to pay the piper will come.
