The space shuttle Atlantis has landed in California, where it was diverted after continuing stormy weather prevented a Florida touchdown.

Atlantis landed at 1539 GMT at Edwards Air Force Base.

Officials had aborted Saturday's planned landing at the Kennedy Space Center for the second consecutive day.

The seven astronauts on board Atlantis have taken part in an ambitious and risky mission to service and re-fit the Hubble telescope.

Nasa said that weather conditions over Florida forced flight controllers to give up on Sunday's first landing opportunity at Kennedy Space Center.

Hubble revamped

Atlantis's mission was intended to give a new lease of life to Hubble.

The orbiting observatory is regarded as one of the most important scientific tools ever built.

The fifth and final mission to service Hubble has been hailed as a great success.

Over five spacewalks, astronauts installed new instruments and thermal blankets, repaired two existing instruments, replaced gyroscopes and batteries.

The only disappointment was the failure to restore the high resolution channel (one of three) on the Advanced Camera for Surveys, which has been responsible for many of Hubble's most impressive images of deep space.

"This is not the end of the story but the beginning of another chapter of discovery by Hubble," said Ed Weiler, associate administrator for Science at Nasa Headquarters.

"Hubble will be more powerful than ever, continue to surprise, enlighten, and inspire us all and pave the way for the next generation of observatories."

Astonomers at Harvard-Smithsonian Institute for Astphysics discovered a diamond in space years ago. I can't believe I just heard, and I'm crazy about things cosmological.

Astronomers discovered the largest diamond of all times in space. The weight of the precious stone reportedly makes up ten billion trillion trillion carats or five million trillion trillion pounds.

The space diamond is 4,000 kilometers in diameter. The stone is located at a distance of 50 light years from Earth, in the Constellation Centaurus.

Scientists believe that the diamond is the heart of an extinct star that used to shine like the Sun. Astronomers have already dubbed the space diamond as Lucy in a tribute to the Beatles song ‘Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.’

Planet six times the mass of Jupiter 'spotted' by astronomers

Astronomers claim to have spotted a new planet around six times the mass of Jupiter.
The technology allows astronomers to see planets of Jupiter's mass in other galaxies

Researchers from the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) claim it is the first planet to be seen outside of our galaxy.

The scientists used a new method of viewing space called microlensing. The method uses a nearer object to bend the light of a distant star when the two align with an observer.

The effect of large, massive objects between an observer and a distant planet or star can cause distortion or multiple images as the intermediary object's gravity bends the passing light.

Microlensing, by contrast, occurs when a less massive object lies in the middle. The technology allows astronomers to see planets of Jupiter's mass in other galaxies.

Because the effect depends on smaller objects that will be moving quickly relative to one another, microlensing events are fleeting, happening over the course of minutes or hours.

Moreover, the mutual alignment of two small, far-flung objects with an observer on the Earth is exceptionally rare.

For that reason, dense collections of millions of stars, such as the Andromeda galaxy, are surveyed in order to detect them.

But given that microlensing events from a given pair of objects happens just once, astronomers cannot return to the planet candidate to confirm the idea.

Dr De Paolis, one of the researchers, said he was "encouraged" by the possibility of detecting planets at such phenomenal distances.

"The interesting thing is that the technology is in place to truly see planets of Jupiter's mass and even less in other galaxies," he said. "It's an exceptional thing."

Is that the planet?Whoaaaaaa-what a beauty.
Why didn't they give its specifics, like what galaxy it's on.
