Waste management – private sector urged to get involved

With a population of close to 18 million people, waste management is a top priority for the Lagos State Government. The current administration is urging the private sector to get involved in all areas of waste management.

Investment Opportunities

Lagos produces 9 000 tonnes of waste per day. With a population density of 4 193 people per km2 and a projected population of 25.4 million by 2015, issues related to waste loom large in any development strategy - and present a wide range of possibilities for the investment community.

Opportunities for investment exist in all areas of waste mangement and serious investors are welcome to submit their proposals. Some of the specific opportunities identified by the state government include:

Waste conversion

Waste can be converted into various products, including fertiliser, methane gas and electricity. A company called Earthcare Technologies Incorporated has already invested successfully in this area and is currently running Africa's largest compost factory in Lagos.

Waste transfer loading stations

Lagos needs 14 transfer loading stations in the waste management sector and investors are needed urgently.

Compactors

Lagos needs 450 compactors for the efficient transport of refuse. The state anticipates being able to supply 200 (with the input of local companies). The shortfall of 250 compactor trucks represents an opening for foreign investors.

Wheeler bins

A huge market exists for this product in Lagos as the state government is simultaneously driving a public health programme together with a concerted drive to formalise all refuse storage and collection.

Motorised street cleaners

Approximately 375 kilometres of road has been prioritised by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) as urgently in need of regular street cleaning. The agency is willing to pay contractors to do the job.

Modes of Investment

The state government is offering the following modes of investment:

-Private sector financed and operated
-State to create enabling environment
-Provision of land
-Organisation of producers to supply factory
-Patronage of products where applicable
-Partnership with the state government
