The web browser's data management app will be integrated on new phones and will let users save up to 60 percent more data.

Opera has plans to be more than a web browser, and its just-announced partnership with 14 tech brands such as Samsung and Xiaomi is exactly how it will achieve this.

The partnership will see Opera's data management app, Opera Max, being embedded onto smartphones. The company expects that by 2017, over 100 million handsets will ship with its data-compression technology embedded.

Apart from big names Samsung and Xiaomi, Opera has signed up new Asian manufacturers such as Acer and Hisense. The latter, known more for its television sets, has also started making smartphones.

Opera says its Opera Max will help reduce data consumption by up to 50 percent across apps, while those watching video on Youtube or Netflix can save 60 percent more data without "a noticeable loss of quality."

"Many users are wary of using mobile data for fear of spending too much or exceeding their data caps. We see OEMs responding to this and stepping up to lower the barrier to mobile internet access by providing a data-optimization solution on their devices," said Sergey Lossev, Opera Max's product manager in a statement.

The data savings from Opera Max will be particularly useful in developing countries in Asia, such as Indonesia or newly grown markets such as Latin America and Africa, where the mobile infrastructure is barely sufficient to handle the increased load from cheap Chinese-made smartphones.

In fact, with Xiaomi already making moves on the African market, its handsets running the company's customised version of the Android operating system, MIUI 7, will soon have Opera Max embedded as well. The data-compression software is currently undergoing beta testing on Xiaomi's phones and will be released to its users in a forthcoming update.
