[b]Manu Garba Names Enterprising Midfieder Sani As U-17 Captain

Coach Manu Garba has named burly midfielder Abduljabar Sani as captain of the new set of Nigeria U-17 team, Golden Eaglets, ahead of Saturday’s Africa U-17 qualifier against Niger Republic at the National Stadium, Abuja.

Sani, sourced from Jos-based G-Smart Academy, has been one of the mainstays of the new-look Golden Eaglets. 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup-winning coach Garba told thenff.com that the choice of Sani as well as his assistants, was based on merit and sound behavioural conduct.

“We have been watching all the players over time and there is no doubt
that Abduljabar has been very outstanding in terms of performance and
general attitude amongst his colleagues,” explained Garba. “He is level-headed and we have also seen in him leadership qualities, and also he mixes freely with other players.”

To assist Sani are defender Igoh Ogbu and goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleke who Garba described as exemplary and outstanding in their respective positions on the field: “Igoh and Adebayo are very outstanding players with strong personalities; Igoh for instance is like my former captain, Musa Muhammed with his commitment to the game while Adebayo is one of the best goalkeepers I have seen at this level in all my life in youth football; myself and the technical team believe they would both complement Abduljabar.”

Incidentally, Sani, who was captain of G-Smart Academy on his way to the national camp, said he was humbled by his choice as Golden Eaglets’ captain, saying he was ready for the demand of leading Nigeria to glory: “I’m very happy to be named the captain; Insha Allah (by the grace of Allah), we shall win our matches.”

DEPLETED EAGLETS WIN FINAL WARM-UP 4-0

Despite being stripped bare of their best players, Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets battered Piloter Football Academy of Kaduna 4-0 in a final warm-up game before this weekend’s U17 AFCON qualifier against Niger.

About half of the 60-man Eaglets squad failed an age test last week with the first team most affected, but even at that the Eaglets controlled this test game from start to finish inside the mainbowl of the Abuja National Stadium Wednesday evening.

The Eaglets welcome Niger on Saturday at the same venue in an U17 AFCON qualifier first leg with the return leg in Niamey.

[b]EXCLUSIVE: STAGGERING 26 FAIL EAGLETS MRI TEST, FIRST-TEAM WIPED OUT

Nigeria will be hugely depleted for Saturday’s U17 AFCON qualifier at home against Niger after a staggering 26 players out of 60 failed the mandatory MRI screening conducted last week.

A top official told only AfricanFootball.com that what is disturbing is not only the high number of those who failed the age test, but the quality of those who will not be eligible as the Eaglets starting XI have been completely wiped out with only two surviving players.

“It is a disaster,” exclaimed one devastated official.

“Virtually the first team the coaches have been working on have been disqualified. It’s a serious problem.”

We have exclusively gathered that top NFF officials have now gone into panic mode with blames being traded over “this mass failure”.

Several of the players were in tears and total shock when the final results came through this morning.

The affected players have since quit the team’s training camp in Abuja for their various bases.

Among those who flung the age test was a star striker, who came through the national U15 team and has been outstanding in training leading up to Saturday’s AFCON qualifier.

Another promising player disqualified only recently forced his way into the starting XI of coach Manu Garba’s team after a late call-up.

As first reported only by AfricanFootball.com, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have moved swiftly to ensure a much more transparent management of this MRI test by deploying independent doctors to the various member-associations.

In the case of Nigeria, an Egyptian doctor supervised the screening exercise last week.

Nigeria have won the FIFA U17 World Cup a record five times – 1985, 1993, 2007, 2013 and 2015.

Baffling disaster. I hope we have agents who watched those that failed and help them have promising careers.

My heart is with the heart broken players but this is a different time in Nigerian Football. We need true U17 players to breakthrough from this process.

The coaches have to go back to work with those who are available. Wish the Eaglets the best.

[b]AYC 2017 QUALIFIERS: Wasteful Golden Eaglet Labour To 1-0 Win Over Niger Republic

The Nigeria Under-17 team are presently facing the prospect of missing out on next year Africa Under-17 Championship, after a slim 1-0 win over Niger Republic in the first leg of the second round of qualifiers.

Nigeria started on the front foot mounting pressure on the visitors, with top striker Nazifi Yahaya wasting a two good chances to put the Nigerians ahead in the opening ten minutes.

Yahaya later turned provider for Oluwatobi Ola in the 15th minute to score what ended up as the only goal of the game, no thanks to the wasteful nature of the Manu Garba lead Eaglets.

The reverse tie will be played in a fortnight in Niger with Nigeria having the difficult task of protecting their slim win in the first leg.

[b]NIGER U17 COACH BOASTS: WE WILL BEAT NIGERIA 3-0

Niger U17 coach Soumaila Tiemogo has written off Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets, boasting his team will reverse a 1-0 loss in Abuja by winning 3-0 in the return leg at home to advance to the next round of the tournament.

“In Niamey, we beat Nigeria 3-0 insha Allah. We prepared very well for this qualifier. The Nigeria team are not a team,” said the coach.

“Once we score the first goal, everything will change.”

However, Eaglets coach Manu Garba argued that Niger will be under pressure to win in front of their fans and that could well work against them.

“Niger are not a bad team, but they will be the ones under pressure in the return leg,” he said.

The Eaglets smashed past their Niger counterparts in 2012 6-0 at home after winning the first leg in Niamey 4-1.

At the 2015 U17 AFCON hosted by Niger, Nigeria again triumphed 2-0 with goals by Kelechi Nwakali and Victor Osimhen.

Nigeria U17 coach Manu Garba has told AfricanFootball.com his team will set up a training camp in Sokoto a week to an U17 AFCON qualifier second leg match in Niger.

The Eaglets won the first leg 1-0 in Abuja on Saturday with the return leg in Niamey on August 20.

“We will train and acclimatize in Sokoto a week to the match in Niger,” Manu disclosed.

The coach also expressed confidence the Eaglets will do the double over their opponents.

“We will beat them in Niger by God’s grace,” he said.

“We have seen the lapses with these youngsters, who were playing only their first international game.

“I assure Nigerians we will be smiling again after the match in Niger because we cannot afford to go out at this stage of the competition.”
