Tragedy! Luxury Bus Rams Into Stationery Tanker Loaded With Diesels

15 May 200

Lagos -- TRAGEDY struck in Edo state today when a luxury bus rammed into a stationery tanker loaded with diesel killing over fifty persons on the spot.

The incident which occurred between the university town of Ekpoma in Esan West Local Government Area and Irrua at about 5:30pm threw residence of the area into mourning. it was said that the tanker exploded causing severe fire which roasted the luxury passengers said to be travelling to Onitsha alive.

Vanguard learnt that only five persons in the luxury bus survived the tragic incident.

The incident happened barely two weeks after fourteen market women lost their lives in an accident at Ewu, along the same Benin Auchi road.

It was learnt that two out of the five survivals who were rushed to the Irrua Specialist Hospital, which is situated close to to the accident scene, are in a very critical situation.

There was serious traffic jam along the Auchi-Okenne due to the incident until men of the Federal Road Safety Commission arrived to clear the ever busy road whcih also led to Abuja. As at 11am the fire was still raging.

The Zonal Commander of the Federal Roads Safety Commission in Benin , Alhaji Zakari Nda, who confirmed the incident to newsmen on the telephone explained that it was difficult for him to confirm the exact number of people killed in the accident as the vehicle was still burning.

He said however that the luxury bus was traveling from Sokoto to Onitsha when the accident occurred at the Edo axis of the road, adding that the passengers' manifest extracted from the bus showed that 41 people left Sokoto with the bus and that it was difficult to know if some people disembarked before the accident or there was even over loading.

He said that most of the victims were burnt beyond recognition which made it difficult to count and get the exact number of people who lost their lives in the inferno caused by the impact of the explosion.

Nda regreted that some of the victims were trapped in the bus while others were seen in various positions as they tried to escape from the luxury, explaining that five people survived the accident and were responding to treatment at the Specialist Hospital Irrua, where they were rushed to for treatment.

He added that the management of the hospital had discharged one of the lucky survivors who volunteered to leave the hospital on his own. But Vanguard was reliably informed that the victims would not be less than fifty five due to the passengers they picked on the way outside the ones registered in the manifest.
