Who Are The Most Powerful People In Nigeria? by nolongTing: 12:14pm On May 24, 2009
I was having a debate with some freinds about the people who really have the most power in Nigeria. I quickly blurted out Politicians! But I was suprised with the number of answers I received. Some said religious leaders and others said businessmen and Traditional rulers.  Some even said academics!  So can you give your opinion on who the most powerful group in Nigeria is by putting the list below in the correct order

1.  Journalists      2.  Soldiers     3.  Religious leaders    4.  Academmics (i.e teachers, professors etc)    5.  Policemen    6.  Politicians
7.  Traditional rulers (e.g Obas, Sultan/Emirs, Ezes etc)    8.  Businessmen    9.  Millitants    10. Customs officers

The most powerful people in Nigeria today are the Religiuos Leaders. They wield so much power but they have not been able to use that power to effect changes in Nigeria. All the inept and corrupt Politicians we keep complaining about will quickly develop cold feet if they are summoned by their church or Islamic leaders. We know how many of our Governors went to the Redemption Camp during the Holy Ghost Festivals. Some of them hold on to the words of our various Arch Bishops and Bishops, Imams and Alfas, Shrine Priests and Babalawos as if their lives depend on it. Our religious leaders need to borrow a leaf from Martin Luther King Jnr, who despite being a Baptist Minister, fought for the rights of Blacks and other minorities in the USA. Cheers.

Just laughing at the idea of the thread.

@ Post
I think I will put the religious leaders at the top of this list. Unfortunately, religion has little or no positive effect on nigerians considering the rot in Nigeria.

Did I hear you guys say Religious Leaders?  So not true.

Tell me, is it the religious leaders that determine who wins elections or re-runs?
Is it religious leaders that interact with other leaders from other countries to strike selfish, meaningless deals that affect only a few?
Is it our religious leaders that put the Niger Delta poor where they are, forcing them to turn violent?
Are they the ones that make policies in this country?

Make no mistake, anybody who is blaming our religious leaders for not having helped Nigeria is not being fair at all. They would help, but all that they can do is talk. Do u want them to take up arms or go on hunger strike, what else do u want them to do that they aren't doing already?

POLITICIANS are by far, the most powerful people in this country.
Re: Who Are The Most Powerful People In Nigeria? by sparkle3: 10:31pm On May 24, 2009
HE-OH! I pray we don't start another anti- religious leaders conversation on this post. Because before we know it, names will start being mentioned and people will start being debased. Anyway, U said most powerful GROUP so I'll have to sayyyyy JOURNALISTS. I'm of the belief that if journalists unite and take a stand on a particular topic, they can sway the minds of almost everybody. Eg, If everyday in the papers, on tv, over the radio we hear praises of Hitler, even with the bad things we've heard that he did, we just might be led to believe that he was a good man fighting for a good cause. U know how they say a pen is mightier than the sword, so u can imagine the strength of plenty pens (+voices)

Whoever is Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.
So the answer can be either politicians or soldiers depending on the political dispensation.

wow. that's deep but please, what is a 74 year old woman doin in such active service?

Well, my point was she is saying that there is no people power in Nigeria - Nigerians are cowards who will not fight for their rights. Her age is irrelevant to me, I mean is she not around the same age as Obasanjo?
Re: Who Are The Most Powerful People In Nigeria? by sparkle3: 11:16pm On May 24, 2009
It's true sha. We'v really got used to suffering and smiling as a nation. It's only little little groups that fight for what they want at times but together, it's a different story apart from the nationwide strikes and how successful were those?

I will go for Soldiers and businessmen. We can all recollected during the Babangida era when Ogboru, a businessman collaborate to sponsor a coup in Nigeria, it was one of the most widely celebrated coup and had it been that it was successful maybe NIGERIA will be in a different era now.
So, i will always go for Soldiers and Businessmen, any other professions or institution can fight it out with other positions. grin

Look at all the clueless Nairalanders typing out shitsmoke from their keypads. know ye not that 9ja is a big bad zoo, where monkey dey work baboon dey chop?, or do you think that being powerful is the same as making noise.

THE MOST POWERFUL PEOPLE IN 9JA ARE THE BABOONS

all those that have their probosces plunged deep into the arteries of the nation's resources are the powerful people. this baboon tribe covers all the 10 groups mentioned above by the poster. 9ja's god is mammon and his servants which are found in all the 10 groups are the most powerful people for now.
