Lets Be Frank, Ijaws Are Looking For Trouble! by oloyeagba1: 12:19pm On May 25, 2009 |
I am sure there is hardly any Nigerian apart from the thieving politicians, who is against fair share of oil resources for Niger Delta. However we can't be held hostage to achieve this. We have bent backward enough. Ijaws are the only minority group with a whole state to themselves in Bayelsa. Even Jonathan was purposely chosen as VP to parley them. There are NDDC and ministry of Niger Delta all with billions of naira budget. Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa are the richest states in Nigeria in that order according to revenue allocation. I know they don't want the rest of us to share in the oil money. Fair enough. However you need a constitutional amendment to achieve that and this require democratic procedure not violent. It was this kind of gra gra attitude that destroyed the true federalism we had in the first republic when each regions controlled her resources. One of the result of the useless civil war, apart from the unnecessary waste of lives, was the concentration of power by the federal govt. The more Ojukwu threatened to secede the more power Gowon grabbed for the federal govt. By the time the dust settled we were left with 12, 19, 21 and now 36 powerless states that can't do anything unless federal govt let them. To understand clearly what was lost remember that each region was sufficiently powerful enough that Ojukwu was able to raise an army. Which state or tribe in Nigeria can raise an army? The best we can do are some ragtag militants (OPC, Massob, Mend etc) who are of no match or the Nigerian Army. Nigeria's democracy is not perfect but that is all we have and the best we can do is to come up with ideas to fix it. Not Threats and propaganda.

I think what we need to do is to develop a political wing for MEND and shoot less bullets if a political party called MEND sweeps Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta then we can take the central Government to court for Devolution of some powers to the region no need for bullets except it is absolutely necessary The current PDP Governors seem to be confused where they stand whether . . . . do they stand for Ijaw Kindom? or for Nigeria |

l wonder what the hell the Niger Deltas want on earth, they've been given virtually what they want and if really they want the total control of the oil, then it's going to be a lost battle for them 'cos nigerian solidiers will finish them and l clearly support that. enough of violence. |

What is happening in niger delta is a nigerian probem, whether you are form the south, north, west or east,as long as you are part of the masses, you are part of the oppressed, everybody feels the pinch, unless of course you are a politician or in one way or the other related to one,or you are a corrupt official,ie,the police, army, customs, etc,or you are a rogue business person. You have to be a crooked person to align with an oppressive government that is destroying her people, korokoro. |

I believe Nigerians need to fight for their individual land titles. As long as the government treats Nigerians like squatters in their forefather's ancestral lands there will be unrest. It can happen to any tribe, any people. |

emmy4naira: Under a democratic constitution, they can control their oil resources. They haven't been given shit so people need to put themselves in the Niger Deltans' shoes. They made Lucky the vice president, how the hell will that change niger delta? The roads are still bad, the people are still oppressed, and now the military is going at it. It's their ancestral land, they didn't recently emigrate there. MEND is not representing the Niger Delta people. Go to Port Harcourt and see what the people are crying for; same thing every Nigerian is crying for but they are angrier because billions go out of their land everyday but the people still live in penury. A federal government is not what Nigeria needs at all. We are indigenous to these Lands therefore should be allow to rule ourselves while the federal government make sure no human right is abused. That's the only thing that can work for Nigeria federalism will compound the problem. |

Na today? There are two types of responses when your back is against the wall. Fight or flight? There are those who talk by fighting and others who fight by talking and there are others who keep quiet and look the other way. The Niger Delta has chosen to fight for their rights. The trouble that you refer to may well end up at the International Criminal Court in the Hague. https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-276324.0.html |

the militants have to be rehabilitated since they'll find it difficult to reintegrate back into normal society. The problem is, how do you debrief them? People who are used to taking up arms as the only means of conflict resolution. They've also been exposed to a lifestyle involving large sums of money, oil bunkering and living large. Fancy cars, expensive jeeps, "calling the shots" from their militant positions in the Niger Delta. Tough call and I dont envy whichever foreign or Nigerian leader is on that seat right now trying to straighten out all this. |

tpiah: No wahala, they need to be fast tracked into the armed forces, they have already proved they are combat ready. As for living large, again, the armed forces appears to be the logical destination. |
