Confused Computer Science Graduate Hi Nairalanders. I have a first degree in computer science and i just got through with my youth service. The problem i have now is that i'm confused on which aspect of i.t to go into in order to update myself. Though av always liked networking, but as a graduate of computer science, i think i ought to be vast in all d branches of i.t. Kindly advise me on what aspect to start with and all d relevant aspects i ought to know. |

Computer science graduate on this end, means one has done a lot of computer application development/programming, design, etc. So, if you did mostly networking than focus on that. If you did quite a little bit of programming and you think you like it, then do it. You ought to know where your strength lies though. |

i think bossman is absolutely right. you ought to know where your strenght lies. computer science graduates do not have to be vast in every aspect of IT. that's for those who studied information technology, and even those too specialize. i am also a graduate of computer science and currently into applications development. nothing more, although i could still advise when it comes to other facets of IT. |

@Naijafan What advice do you have for database management newbies |
Re: Confused Computer Science Graduate Needs Guidance by naijafan(m): 7:58am On Oct 20, 2006 |
Someone going into database management would most likely be working with MSSQL Server or Oracle DB. This two DBMS allow the the admin a greaat deal of control over his databases. Stored procedures, and a lot of other functions could be written to enhance the performance of the database. not much of a database guy tho but i've worked with them on a lot of projects, u'knw web applications is mostly about inserting to and deleting from databases. On projects where no complex databases are necessary, i use MS Access myself. actually, MS Access isnt for a database newbie at all. its something anybody could do. MS SQL Server should make a good starting point, and if in the long run you find out you love Oracle, you can move on to their platform although i feel SQL Server isnt bad either. Note that i didnt say anything about MySQL. I feel its unneceessary to complex (like re-inventing the wheel). Although some developers have created a GUI for it, its features are mostly on the same level with MS Access. I stand to be corrected tho, cos i've stated earlier that i'm not a database guy. |
