4 Adventurous Trips To Take Before The Year Runs Out by Jovago: 2:21pm On Dec 01, 2015

It is already December! The year is almost over and you are just in time to pack your bags and head out for some adventure.

A trip filled with adventure will give you that once-in-a-lifetime experience you need to finish up the year with a bang and you also earn a fascinating tale to share with your family and friend at the countdown bonfire night. Luckily, Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation boasts of a number of places where you can live out this experience, and Jovago.com, Africa’s No. 1 online hotel booking portal has gathered 4 most adventurous trips for the curious and active traveler to take before the year runs out.

Bear in mind that you do not have to put yourself in harm’s way to have an epic adventure. Also, whether your aim is to fuel your mind, your body, or both, these options are bound to keep the snooze out of your stories.

Climb the ‘Mountain of Death’ at Adamawa
The name alone sends shivers down any spine; however, this mountain may not be as lugubrious as the name suggests. More commonly referred to as Gangirwal, rather than “the mountain of death”, its direct translation, the mountain stands as the highest in Nigeria at 7,963 ft (2,419 m) and is found in the Adamawa Mountains in a remote corner of Gashaka-Gumti National Park (GGNP). Hiking across Gangirwal takes about 8-10 days if time is allowed to visit remote rural communities and look for wildlife; and it affords a unique insight into the culture, scenery and natural biodiversity of the region. There is also the chance of spotting some of the important wildlife species that GGNP is famed for including chimpanzee, giant-forest hog and buffalos.

Go Camping at Owami Desert
Most people are not aware that there is a desert in Nigeria, however, the Owami Desert desert which is again part of the Sahara desert, offers adventurous travellers a great opportunity to experience the wild in a most unique way. The desert is full of interesting plants and animal species, and its big, dramatic vista has a way of putting the camper in a sit and think mode. As long as you are not put off by the extreme temperatures and unusual fauna, you are bound to get into the desert rhythm and have a marvelous time.

Tour the Omo Forest Reserve
Although not a very popular tourist site, the Omo Forest Reserve is an excellent site for an adventure with nature. Named after the Omo tree, the breath-taking reserve is home to over 8,000 species of plants and 125 species of bird, including several mammals and endangered species such as the African forest Elephants, the White-throated Guenon Monkeys and Chimpanzees. Most visitors climb the Beetle Hill within the site for best view of the reserve.

Experience the ancient history of Benin Kingdom at the Igue (Ewere) Festival
There is no better way to have an adventure than joining a local festival, especially when it explores a culture so rich and deep. The great Benin Kingdom is one of the most ancient not only in Nigeria, but Africa at large, and the Igue festival is a celebration of its origin. Celebrated during the first half of December in Benin City, the festival includes the Oba’s blessing of the land and his people. It is a seven-day long dance presentation usually for peace and progress, and sacrifices as well as offerings are made to the Oba (king) ancestors on full regalia for a mock battle. Visitors can expect much costumed dancing, battle recreations and colourful parades.
