I have been watching the trend of most produced musical tracks lately, particulalrly the Hip Hop genre. The instrumentation and by this i mean, the piano works, strings, horns, guitar chops are always quite light and sometimes apparently non existent. Save for the drum kicks and hiat laced with konga which are given pride of place. I agree that the instrument should not overshadow the voicing on the track, but then, there is the place of the instruments too. I also noticed that to cover this particular shortcoming, todays producer tend to look for a simple piano line, using some funny tone all over the track as the song unique "signature". The argument here is that such unique tone sticks on the mind of the people, Gongo Aso, Lorile e.t.c readily comes to mind here!


So the question is, does it mean that most producers favours light instrumentation today as the new trend particulaly in the Hip Hop genre with heavy drum kicks, or they are plain being lazy or simply working with the knowledge they have about musical production?
