Forty customers of the Electricity
Company of Ghana (ECG) have been
arrested for power theft. They were
arrested during an exercise organised by
the ECG with the assistance of the police
to clamp down on illegal connections.

During the exercise, the customers, whose
power supply had earlier been
disconnected for non-payment of bills, had
self-reconnected the power.

Briefing the press in Kumasi Thursday, the
Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations
Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police
(ASP) Mr Mohammed Tanko, said the
police had been assisting the company to
clamp down on the activities of power
thieves for some time now.

He said the exercise, which was carried out
in Suame, Danyame and Abuakwa district
areas of the ECG, saw 40 arrested for
power theft and illegal connection.

He said unlike previous exercises where
the company allowed the suspects to pay
the amount owed with a penalty without
prosecuting them, “this time we want the
law to take its full course to serve as a
deterrent to others”.
