Yes bro, there is hope. You need to horn your skill very well. Also look into server OS like windows and Linux. Dig deep as u can, one day opportunity will present itself.

Also note that since a lot of things are not going well in the country now due to political instability, you hardly see openings these days
But we are talking of career not hustling. So it is a life time career. Just given inn ur best success will attain you.

The truth is dere are quite a good number of DBA jobs in Nigeria . but bcoz databases are very delicate and also the livewire of any company's operation they will prefer going for more experienced hands than rookies.
My advice is back urself up wit a knowledge of sys admin maybe MCITP. You can easily get a job as a sys Admin and wen Ur given the opportunity u can now display Ur DBA skills.

i would advice you to learn about oracle database, 12c is not popular yet in this country, start with 11g, obtain the certification and approach one of this IT firms for voluntary job service. you will learn and develop your core skills in a real life scenario. It takes time and patience. Don't go for the money now just go for the experience later the money will come looking. All this is just within 6 month to a year depending on how good you are. Wish you all the best bro.

Hi guys,

Its common knowledge that the IT sector in Nigeria is expanding; but it seems, in terms of the job market, there are more vacancies for software developers than for database administrators.

Please guys working in an IT firm/sector should enlighten us, are companies not using MYSQL or SQL server?

Thanks.

Hi op,
I have a colleague in my coy that urgently needs to learn MySQL. He requires the knowledge to brazen his line of duty. I already sent you a pm, kindly reply to let me know if you are interested.
Regards!

1. most software developers work and make use of data base (ie fully stack developers) and are quite good at it. So whats the point in hiring a data base administrator when you can get both a software developer and a database administrator in one person.
2. Even though you are to be considered by any company, with time you will get obsolete cause php and mysql is going into oblivion and the future is node.js and angularJs which are very cool and faster than mysQl. So if you still want to be in business bro. get updated.
3. If you gat the right connections and know exactly where to look you will find lots of opportunities.
4. cool

My brother, having all that does not guarantee a job. I did mcitp and after paying so much for it, its basically of no use right now.

I don't quite agree with you, a wise man once said "a lizard in Nigeria is a lizard in America", while i agree that the US might offer more opportunities with a more enabling environment, with determination and tact you can achieve a lot in Nigeria.
If we all heed your advice and migrate there will be no Nigeria, so please lets stay here and work together to make Nigeria our own America.

Thanks all for your advice, tips and encouragement, ppreciate it… Hopefully more Nigerian institutions would migrate to electronic system of data management.
@DonTim1 your comment was wow, thanks for taking the time to elaborate on what’s obtainable in the Nigerian environment.
@SylarsMcQuins I quite understand what you mean, some comments just have no correlation. Well I guess they still took out time to comment (regardless of how irrelevant), so I’ll still thank them for that.
@Creatrixity – You are probably right, it’s the same reason most SMEs couple the administrative and human resources department together, to save cost on personnel and stuff. I guess they’re doing same with software developers.

annnnnd thanks mods for moving this to FP grin grin

For a starter in the IT industry, either on software or hardware direction, get a general skill in either direction e.g for software, have a good knowledge of one key programming skill, good knowledge of one database, good knowledge of web development skill thereafter focus on a major core. Idea is that you can never approach a company without having anything to offer them. This works in Nigeria system as many employers desires a utility staff. Don't loose hope, just get another front end skill to add to what you know.

We have everything, but corruption makes it look like we have nothing.Kill corruption and things will fall in place. How do we kill corruption?By making new policies that sees corruption as a criminal offence which will attract nothing less than a death sentence and watch Nigeria becoming a great nation. We're so rooted in corruption that you begin to wonder if it's one of the criterias of becoming a government official.

Africa's largest economy definitely has lots of needs for Database Administrators. The banks, Insurance companies all need your skill and with the explosion of ecommerce, the sky is the limit.

You just have to, as someone pointed out, package yourself or if you are the entrepreneurial type, there is an ocean of opportunities in getting something going. You could be the next Larry Ellison if you are also adept at development.

Good luck!

Re: Any Hope For A Database Administrator In Nigeria by Dejav: 7:04am On Dec 12, 2015
There is plenty of hope my brother, the challenge is that you need experience which is difficult to come by as the major Databases like Oracle and Ms SQL Server are expensive and only big Organisations can afford it,

I started with studying Oracle at NIIT then I went into IT training to solidify my knowledge, it took me years b4 I had the opportunity to work on a production DB.

Also if you don't want to go into front end coding as most DBAs end up doing, you can explore Business Intelligence and Data Analysis which is an emerging market. If u use Ms SQL Server, take a look at SSIS, SSRS, SSAS. They are SQL server services tools/apps

Lots of prospects, know your excel, Access, Mysql, Php and Oracle if you so desire.

Many organizations require simple solutions that work, you can advise them and run some good queries producing results that help them make informed decisions.

Nigeria not America/Europe is where the money is.
