Yet another major technological breakthrough has been achieved with the recent discovery by scientists of the LiFi technology which is supposedly 100 times faster than WiFi

The new technology called LiFi (Light Fidelity) promises connections up to 100 times faster than WiFi. According to researchers, the new alternative technology transmits high-speed data using visible light communication, which would reach speeds of 1 Gbps, which is about 100 times faster than a standard WiFi.

LiFi is an alternative to wireless networking that is based on visible light communication (VLC) was invented in 2011 by Harald Haas from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland . LiFi technology uses pulsating LED light that is invisible to the human eye to send data from one LiFi enabled device to another.

The transmission via LiFi is made using LED lights, which flicker on and off so fast that it is completely imperceptible to the human eye. LiFi could, for example, allow users to download a HD movie in micro seconds.

According to “Deepak Solanki, CEO of Velmenni, an Estonian tech company, He said a few pilot projects were being initiated within different industries to utilize the VLC(visible light communication) technology.

He also stated that a smart lighting solution for an industrial environment where the data communication is done through light has been designed in conjunction with a private client, which intends to set up a LiFi network through which internet access is possible in their office area.

Most of all, It’s worthy to note that” Velmenni” isn’t the only firm interested in further developing and bringing LiFi to the real world. Other notable names, such as Oledcomm and Pure LiFi led by the creator of the LiFi technology, Harald Haas, are also working to commercialize the technology. As LiFi is based on light, it cannot go through walls and would have a more limited range than WiFi which also translates to greater security.

CONCLUSION:

If indeed the Li-Fi technology is developed and it’s full capabilities utilized, it’s going to revolutionize the internet completely, the mere thought of it’s speed would impact positively and also it promises for security for the transmission of sensitive information over the web.
