Should EFCC Arrest Jonathan And Iweala? by OLA1055: 5:54pm On Dec 18, 2015
Will Nigeria ever come to a point where past and present leaders who have abused their office are made to face trial and jailed? In other countries, leaders are made accountable for their stewardship while in office. For example, Ehud Olmert, a former Israeli president was jailed for corruption. In Nigeria, many of our leaders who have been directly linked to corruption were never questioned. Will this ever happen? Should Jonathan and Iweala be questioned for abuse of office and if found guilty jailed? Should leaders like former president Ibrahim Babangida and Olusegun Obasanjo not have been made to answer for their time in office? Let’s know what you think.
Nigeria’s former president, Goodluck Jonathan and his former Finance Minister, Okonjo Iweala, are currently in the eye of the storm. In the last few weeks, allegations of massive corruption is said to have been perpetrated in his six year reign as president.Nigerians are still bewildered how billions of dollars meant to procure arms in the fight against Boko Haram disappeared.

In August, an investigation into how money meant to buy arms for the Nigerian army uncovered billions of dollars stolen by the office of the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

Dasuki himself has been at the center of investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. He has been granted bail.

At the last count, the sum of 2.1biilion dollars and $322 million Abacha loot has been re-looted under Jonathan. While the former president had said he did not approve any money, Nigerians have said he cannot continue to play the ostrich.

Reports have also hinted at the possibility of the former president being invited to explain what he knows about the stolen money.

If the EFCC decides to invite Jonathan, it will certainly raise as his supporters and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, will kick at any attempt to make come face to face with investigators.

Inviting Jonathan may be very unlikely. But can the EFCC take the bull by the horn? Inviting a president to answer questions about his or stewardship is nothing new.

In other climes, this is done regulary but in Nigeria no president has ever been directly made to answer questions about their time in office.

From Ibrahim Babangida to Olusegun Obasanjo and other Nigerian leaders that have been alleged to have corruptly enriched themselves while in office.

When are we going to ever have a president who abuse privilege jailed in Nigeria?

Iweala was a position hungry appointee of GEJ who tried to play smart with fire. Lots of things were done with the mindset that corruption will continue to go unchallenged and celebrated. From her body language so far, she reluctantly played dirty for GEJ to save her name from potential scandals. Few people saw probe coming, many saw PDP ruling for 50 yrs.

Point of correction!

Security Vote is not the same thing as money meant to purchase arms to fight Bokoharam as you put it. It goes far beyond that.

All Nigerian State Governors assign billions to themselves in the budget which is not accounted for nor questioned by their respective Legislatures.

Every Executive office in Nigeria from local government to federal government are culpable.

In accounting they call it "miscellaneous" expenses.
In Engineering, it is called "provision for safety".
While in administrative offices they call it "imprest"
