Work has started on the National School Feeding Programme (NSFP) in Nigeria as promised by the government of President Muhammadu Buhari. We would recall that the provision of free meals to primary school pupils was a major point in what the All Progressive Congress (APC) promised Nigerians when they were campaigning to be elected into office.

On Wednesday, December 16, 2015 and Thursday, December 17, 2015, stakeholders from the Agricultural sector, Health sector and Educational sector and the Banking sector gathered together to design a model for the programme and agree on how the National School Feeding Programme would run in Nigeria. Kaduna state is being used as a pilot for the project and whatever works there would be replicated across all the other states in Nigeria.

The project is under the auspices of the office of the Vice President of Nigeria, so staff from the VP’s office were the ones running the show. They tried to carry everybody along and involved everybody present in coming up with a model that would effectively move the farm produce of farmers from the farm to the stomach of the pupils in the school and to also fashion out how each stakeholder in the chain would be involved and be paid for their services.
