Top Nigerian TV Shows Of 2015 by Amaga(m): 1:41pm On Dec 27, 2015
Nigerians are known to be fun seekers and they don’t deserve less. In 2015, television soap opera lovers were treated to a huge package of fun and entertainment in TV series like Tales of Eve: little wonder many of the soaps topped the chart in 2015. ANTHONY ADA ABRAHAM writes.

Jenifa’s Diary

Jenifa’s Diary is about a wannabe village girl who finds herself in a university campus and is determined to feel-among.

She is determined, relentless, creative and rugged. Her different experiences in the “big city” also offer various lessons, which viewers can definitely learn from.

The award winning, hilarious and captivating sit-com has shown that it has more than enough staying power to enthrall, entertain and satisfy audiences over the years.

The hilarious but topical TV series, which stars Funke Akindele as the lead actress, has not only returned to location to shoot its fourth season, it is richer with its trade mark unadulterated humour.

Jenifa’s Diary, a spin-off of the highly-successful movie, Jenifa, is also set to release its music video that combines the music and visuals glaringly that they complement each other and create fun. The song is produced by Fliptyce, with vocals by Funke Akindele Music and K-lite. While the director of the music video is JJC Skillz and Director Q, both seamlessly infused aesthetic and style. The musical video also features cameo appearances by showbiz personalities, including Sound Sultan, Laura Ikeji, Lolo Wazobia, May D, Asisat Oshoala, Kaffy, Gbenro Ajibade and DJ Switch among others.

Super story

Wale Adenuga Productions Ltd. came into existence 27-years ago out of the foresight of a young man, who had trust in God and his ability. When Wale Adenuga graduated from the Business Administration Department of the University of Lagos in 1974, he set his mind on affecting the lives of others through his natural artistic endowments. Wale Adenuga Productions Limited gave birth to some of the most popular and widely circulated magazine ever produced in Nigeria. These were Ikebe Super, Super Story and Binta. When they were published, these magazines sold in the excess of half a million copies per edition. They were a success story. But again for his foresight, the man behind the company recorded Papa Ajasco on the celluloid in 1983 and Binta My Daughter on home video in 1995. A year later, the Papa Ajasco comedy series came on television would reach more Nigerians in this troubled economic period than magazines. His thought proved prophetic. Nigerians in all the states have continued to show appreciation for the programmes. And super story is what has been making people stayed glued to their TV screen every Thursday.

The Johnsons

Recently I started watching The Johnsons, a Mnet Africa comedy/drama family TV sitcom. The Johnsons was probably inspired by “Everybody Hates Chris” as it has some similarities with the series. But, the show definitely has its own unique differences to EHC.

The show is majorly focused on a family (The Johnsons) based in Lagos Nigeria, and how they cope with what life has to offer them. The show features Chinedu Ihedieze(Efe), Osita Iheme(J J), Charles Inojie(Lucky), Ada Ameh(Emu). This TV soap is very funny and interesting; it’s a good watch if you need to lighten up a bit. So far, it’s never been a waste of my 30mins.

TINSEL

Tinsel is a Nigerian soap opera that began airing in August 2008. On May 23, 2013, the show’s 1000th episode aired. It has been called “the most successful television drama on Nigerian television in recent times”. Tinsel is produced by M-Net/Africa Magic.

Tinsel was in pre-production for over ninety months. Over 500 actors were auditioned for the lead role of Fred Ade-Williams before the decision to cast Victor Olaotan was made. As of June 2013, the show’s production cost per minute is 900 dollars, and total costs have exceeded four billion naira. The show was shot in a studio in Ojota, Lagos until March 2013 when a fire destroyed that location. Since then the show has been shot at a studio and a private residence in Ikeja.

Meet the Adebanjos

Meet the Adebanjo’s is a family based British sitcom produced by MTA Productions and created by Debra Odutuyo and Andrew Osayemi. It is currently the UK’s Number 1 British African Sitcom. It is centred on a British-African family living in Peckham, South London. The Sitcom focuses on the larger than life father character Bayo Adebanjo as he struggles to instil his old fashioned African values on his reluctant modern British family. The comedy comes from the typical ups and downs of family life and Bayo’s rivalry with the larger than life and rather eccentric Auntie Funke. The sitcom began as a revolutionary self-funded web series in 2011 and would soon become an international hit on televisions across the globe. With the series being shown in countries like South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda. Since its launch the programme has gained a devoted following in the British-African community. December 2015 it was announced that a 3rd season of Meet the Adebanjo’s will launch on the multi-ethnic content service Lebara Play. The third season will be available to watch from the beginning of 2016 and includes 18 new episodes. Bringing a total of 50 episodes produced.

Skinny Girl In Transit

Skinny Girl in Transit is in its first season but it’s already getting a lot of buzz online. The show is a comedy series starring Ngozi Nwosu and Kenneth Okolie, tells the story of a plus-size radio personality Tiwa, played by Abimbola Craig and her struggle with the pressures of wanting to be in a relationship and to be successful.

Gidi Up

Gidi Up is a TV and web drama series starring OC Ukeje, Somkele Iyamah, Adeyemi Okanlawon and Titi Sonuga. The series follows the lives of four young adults (Obi, Tokunbo, Eki and Yvonne) who are pursuing success and independence in the city of Lagos and all the challenges that come with it. Rich and domineering Miranda, the carefree Lovette; the wannabe Uju; the ex- prostitute Peace, and the trophy wife Cleopatra were those who made the soap great.

Babatunde Diaries

There’s standing out and then there is Babatunde. Follow his daily hustle and see how he manages to survive the infamous Lagos.

Festac Town

Festac Town is authentic, original and was shot as the title tells you, in Lagos’s very own Festac Town. It stars Blossom Chukwujekwu and Francis Duru – What more can we say.

Lekki Wives

Five glamorous and scandalous women come to our screens to tell their story. Rich and domineering Miranda, the carefree Lovette; the wannabe Uju; the ex- prostitute Peace, and the trophy wife Cleopatra.
