#YNaija2015Review: Channels TV, Twitter, Linda Ikeji… | Top 10 most influential media platforms of the year

The top 10 influential media platforms of the year range from the viral churning Buzzfeed to the highbrow Channels Television.
See how they influenced the year that was.
In no particular order:
.
______________________________________________
AFRICA INDEPENDENT TELEVISION (AIT)
Raymond Dokpesi’s Africa Independent Television (AIT) proved to be less than independent this year as the searchlight was beamed on their increasingly biased election coverage tilted towards the former ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This coverage came to the nadir with the airing of a controversial documentary on Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Of course it was later revealed that publisher, Raymond Dokpesi was a recipient of embattled former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki’s largesse.

BOSS MAGAZINE
Publisher of the Ovation franchise Dele Momodu hit pay dirt his very attempt with Boss magazine, a new internet venture that scored with an exclusive interview with perhaps the most hated Nigerian woman, former petroleum minister Diezani Alison-Madueke. With pictures that revealed the former all powerful Alison-Madueke a ghost of her former self as she battled breast cancer and a somewhat fawning interview, Boss magazine made the best kind of entrance. It was always going to be difficult to follow that kind of start but Momodu has the contacts to get the scoops that we expect to follow.
.
______________________________________________
BUZZ FEED
BuzzFeed produces daily content- lists, quizzes, videos- in which the work of staff reporters, contributors, syndicated cartoon artists, and its community are featured. Initially focused exclusively on viral content, Buzzfeed has added more traditional content, building a track record for delivering breaking news and deeply reported articles. The online community, encompassing Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms is super active and has powered viral topics such as #TheDresss to internet breaking popularity.
.

CHANNELS TV
It is not for nothing that John Momoh’s Channels television has won the NMMA Best Television Station for a whopping 10 times since inception. For what other station has been committed to delivering the news at its most urgent with sizzling, informed analysis, concerned empathy and with detailed efficiency? Flagship programs like Sunrise Daily, #RubbinMinds and the News at 10pm have become tonics for the enraptured audience and the team raised the standard on election coverage with their nonstop #NigeriaDecides special.
.

LINDAIKEJI. COM
The most popular address this side of the Sahara has shown no signs of slowing down. In terms of popularity and market size, Linda Ikeji remains queen and the blog which is an extension of the fabulous life of its founder continued its tradition of being the go to place for breaking news, dishy gossip, furious commentary and top of the range advert placements.

NAIRALAND
Seun Osewa’s Nairaland remains the country’s most popular indigenous online community. Currently ranked as the 9 most visited site in Nigeria (according to Alexa.com), Nairaland sees more action than loads of foreign media sites. With boards that offer discussion on any topic under the sun from politics to the economy, sports to entertainment, Nairaland’s simple, interactive design has attracted over 1million registered users and continues to remain relevant.
.
______________________________________________
SLACK
Companies are increasingly ditching email and turning their attention to Slack for all of their internal communication. Launched in 2013, Slack offers persistent chat rooms organized by topic, as well as private groups and direct messaging. All content inside Slack is searchable, including files, conversations, and people, integrating with a large number of third-party services and supporting community-built integrations.
.
______________________________________________
TIME MAGAZINE
One of the most influential magazines in the world, TIME can basically get by on its vaunted name alone. But the committed and ever reliable team headed by the tireless Nancy Gibbs continues to place itself at the center of major world headlines. The magazine’s annual Person of the Year and Most Influential 100 issues continue to be major drivers of conversation and the influence remains unimpeachable.
.
______________________________________________
TWITTER
Created in March 2006, Nigerians have embraced Twitter to the extent that any breaking news development is likely to be unearthed first on the microblogging site. Everything happens on Twitter, from news gathering, networking, business meetings and romantic hook ups. Twitter has through the use of hashtags, converged discussions from all parts of the globe around a single issue in order to raise awareness. Popular hashtags this hear have been #JeSuisCharlie, #NigeriaDecides and #AskHerMore.
.
______________________________________________
VANITY FAIR
Vanity Fair has done some pretty iconic covers in the past, especially as photographed by the legendary Annie Leibovitz (think Demi Moore, pregnant and very nude) but none of what had gone down before prepared the world for the internet breaking image of Caitlyn Jenner (nee Bruce), the former Olympic medallist and later day patron of the Kardashian clan as she detailed her transition process from male to female. The cover and story by Buzz Bissinger easily became the magazine’s most popular one in a long time, driving circulation North wards.
