The Headies is a prestigious music award which started as Hip Hop World Awards in 2006. It has many categories but the highly prized category is the Next Rated category where the winner will go home with an expensive car. Many star artistes in Nigeria have been nominated in the category and nine artistes have won the prize. The Headies 2015 is the 10th edition and Reekado Banks won the Next Rated in the edition as he defeated Lil Kesh, Kiss Daniel, Korede Bello and Cynthia Morgan. According to the organizer, Next Rated is a voting category for people to vote for the most promising upcoming act among the nominees. There shouldn’t be any controversy on the winner. However, my observation on the The Headies 2015 Next Rated category is that it follows the normal trend of the past winners. The past winners didn’t win it with Lil Kesh’s kind of songs. Let me remind you the past winners of the Next Rated category. Asa – 2006 Overdose – 2007 Wande Coal – 2008 Omawumi – 2009 Skuki – 2010 Wizkid – 2011 Davido – 2012 Sean Tizzle – 2013 Patoranking – 2014 It must be noted that Wande Coal was nominated alongside Banky W (Ebute-metta), M.I (Crowdy mentality), GT Guitarman (Dreamer), and Cyrus Da Virus (Very Gbofy) but he won it with his song titled ‘Ololufe’. In 2011, Wizkid was nominated alongside Ice Prince (Oleku), Olamide (Eni Duro), and Tiwa Savage (Kele Kele Love) but he won it with his song titled ‘Holla at your boy’. Sincerely, Reekado Banks deserve the award considering his lyrics in his songs and collaborations in the year under review. He was also featured by Nigerian-American rapper, Wale in ‘Allelu’ which is a plus for him. The only right contender is Kiss Daniel but his lyrics didn’t match Reekado Banks. Besides, Reekado Banks glo ambassador deal gave him chance to perform in more shows in 2015 Alhough Lil Kesh has some hits in the year under review, he needs to work on his lyrics. Truly he released ‘Is it because I love you ft Patoranking’ but it was not released in the year under review (June 2014-June 2015). He should swallow his pride as lyrical werey and learn from Adekunle Gold on how to write good lyrics. He may not win any major award as a rapper. Advisedly, Olamide should stop the ridiculous beef between him and Don Jazzy, although he was provoked. At least, he didn’t get mad when he lost in the category in 2011. He should go and work on how to produce a next rated artiste under his label. I believe Adekunle Gold can win the Next Rated in The Headies 2016. Don Jazzy has now nurtured two next rated artistes; Wande Coal with MoHits Records (defunct) and Reekado Banks with Mavin Records. The secrets of these two artistes involve maturity in their lyrics and production of their songs. Another important secret is the way Don Jazzy is promoting his artistes. A voting award shouldn’t cause any trouble because it’s the duty of music lovers to choose the artiste of their choice. This article is an account of my own observations. I’m a YBNL Nation fan.
