While Nigeria’s new democratic government for a decade deliberately underfunded and crippled the Nigerian army and airforce for fear of a potential coup plot that has characterised Nigeria’s political scene for 40 years the Nigerian Navy was relatively spared the downsizing of the military. Being in charge of protecting Nigerias critical vast oil infrastructure it is easy to see why the Nigerian Navy remains perhaps the best trained and best equiped service of the Nigerian military.

With an all volunteer force of 20,000 personnel the Nigerian Navy is larger than the next 16 Navies in West Africa combined.
