(Chineye had just graduated from the Department of English in the University of Abuja and was preparing for her NYSC)

It all started with a fall 10years ago in which Chineye Christiana Nwafor broke her femur (thigh bone). Following the fall she underwent a surgery and a k-nail (iron) was inserted to support the bone. This surgery was not successful because the k-nail broke in two, her limb was severely shortened afterwards which caused excruciating pains. Therefore a second surgery was necessary to remove the broken k-nail and correct the shortened limb to stop the pains. Hence, her visit to Fortis Hospital NewDelhi after several online consultations with Dr Dhananjay Gupta. Little did she know that the Indian doctors had planned to kill her or how else can we put it?

Dr Gupta and his team carried out the correction surgery on 29th of September, 2015 in Fortis Hospital NewDelhi. Contrary to the original plan of care to remove the broken k-nail, Dr Gupta removed only a fragment which she complained about. A visit to the hospital was necessitated 10days after the surgery because a correction screw (iron) was stiff. Two other doctors were attending to her when suddenly lost consciousness on the dressing table while they were changing the iron and was wheeled to the emergency room.

She was declared dead in about an hour and the best Fortis did was to demand additional payment from a devastated mother who walked into the room where she laid to discovered they had already stuffed near nostrils with cotton wool while her body was still very hot. All pleas to the doctors to continue resuscitation were ignored as they heartlessly told her that there was nothing else they could do and planned to convey her to the mortuary immediately but she refused. The hospital handed the grieving mum and her body to the police and requested an autopsy. Dr Gupta said and signed a letter that she died of severe heart attack, In another email with the Medical Suprintendent Dr Shalini bhalla, insisted that it was breathlessness while in another telephone conversation Dr Gupta suggested possible poisoning. One death several conflicting causes.

EVIDENCES OF NEGLIGENCE AND INHUMANITY

Signs of negligence and inhumanity are evident in the preparedness of the surgery, as the right size of iron for her height was not used even though she has done several physical consultations with Dr Gupta. Secondly no blood thinning medication was prescribed which can cause heart attack and sudden death (Chineye had no history of blood pressure). Thirdly, only one piece of the previously broken iron was removed against the plan of care without prior discussion with patient. Fourthly, she was discharged too early for a patient who have undergone a surgery of this nature. Worse still, there was no proper follow up, no physiotherapist came to visit her despite several complaints from her. Finally, there was no willingness to revive her and they did not show any value for life in the urgency and recklessness with which they declared her dead and hurried her to the mortuary.

AUTOPSY REPORT

All effort to collect the autopsy report for an autopsy conducted on October 11, 2015 has proven abortive. In one instance the police (Inspector Sandeep Kumar) said it was burnt and needed to get another copy from the doctor. In another email Fortis says it is not their duty to persuade the police. What else proves their insensitivity and inhumanity? They called in the Police, They requested the autopsy now they cannot provide it. This only confirms the fears that Chineye was murdered. Emails and letters sent to the Vasant Kunj Police Station in India have been ignored. Even a response from the Indian Embassy in Lagos is still awaited since December 04, 2015 after a protest in which Mr Jagdeep Kapoor Second Secretary Head of Consular promised to contact the hospital.

OUR DEMAND FOR JUSTICE

Our fair, simple and straightforward demand since Chineye's demise has been:

"THE RELEASE OF THE AUTOPSY REPORT" and “THE RESULT OF THE INVESTIGATION INTO HER DEATH AS STATED ON THE DEATH CERTIFICATE EXPLAINING ALL ANOMALITIES”.

MESSAGE TO NIGERIANS

Let us stand against this murderous act, injustice, oppression and wickedness. Many Nigerians that have also had unpalatable experiences in their search for medical aid in India and have refused to share their story. Fortis Hospital has a branch in Abuja Nigeria. A result of failure of government to provide well funded and adequate hospitals for her citizenry.

I hope appropriate agencies of govt within ministry of foreign affairs and NASS will look into this matter. Likewise a bill need to be passed banning public officers from seeking medical treatment abroad as such will make them develop our health facilities.

I wish the family strength to bear this loss.

the family is being ignored by fortis, is it not to go to another medical center for autopsy? Armed with the result, you can now know if she died of negligence or not. You can't be shouting injustice when you don't have any evidence whatsoever. Get the autopsy, then go to court
