This evening,a case of lassa fever was confirmed at the Lagos University teaching Hospital. The said patient has been isolated and the hospital has started to prepare itself to deal with the reality.More info later

Lassa fever outbreak is in the country at the moment. Few tips

1. Avoid contacts with rats, as much as possible.

2. Process your food under hygienic conditions (stop spreading garri etc. on the roadside, rats can infect it)

3. Store your food in rat-proof containers

4. Dispose your refuse properly, and keep them away from the house

5. Maintain a high level of hygiene at all times

6. Dont self-medicate, lassa fevr present with "malaria-like" symptoms

7.Lassa fever patients must be isolated and treated, because secondary transmission from man-man is more dangerous than rat-man.

More tips

If anyone is sick or having fever around you, take him or her to a "qualified" doctor, who should do a test to diagnose a disease, not treating "malaria and typhoid" as some of these "outdated" clinics and labs are doing

Regular handwashing will do you a lot of good, against any infectious disease (Lassa,Ebola etc.)

Lassa fever is here, though no confirmed case in Lagos yet,I suspect there will be one soon(No thanks to a nation that doesn't value human lives).

If you or anyone has "malaria-like" symptoms get a diagnosis and appropriate medical attention.Everything is not "malaria and thyphoid". If you are not a doctor don't become one overnight because if you contact the disease from someone else it's more dangerous than contacting it from rat.

Doctors have to be extra careful in handling patients;protect urself

Spread the right word, and be careful.

The LUTH Lassa fever patient is stable. So lassa fever prognosis is good if reported early. If u feel sick get medical attention.Pls don't self medicate

As part of the team managing the lassa fever outbreak in Lagos,I'll give a daily update on this thread.I ve noticed that many pple are saying a lot on this lassa fever, but not all information are correct:e.g The issue of not drinking garri but using it to make EBA is a fallacy.Boiling heat can't kill a virus

As at today,we have 3 confirmed cases of lassa fever in Lagos, one was dead before we detected it.We have some suspected cases we are still investigating.More update to come soon

TODAY'S UPDATE

The response team in Lagos state are working round the clock to ensure lassa is routed out soonest.More suspected cases are being investigated(I'll let u know outcome soon)

Pls note that though we've all confirmed Mastomys natalensis(multimammate) rat as the transmitting agent, there are suggestions that the common rat we have all over Nigeria, Rattus rattus might also be able to transmit the disease (I'll post more on this soon)
