In secondary school I was taught that "there are 2 electrons in the first shell and 8 electrons in the 2nd shell, and all other shells". It was also said that the maximum number of electrons a shell can have is 2n^2, meaning the third shell can actually hold a maximum of 18 electrons. When drawing orbitals and filling them up with electrons, why don't we put 18 electrons in the third (m) shell? |
