The Lagos state government has confirmed the outbreak of Lassar fever in the state, saying that it has claimed the life of one person so far.

The Lagos state government has confirmed the death of one of the three cases of Lassa Fever in the state.

Vanguard reports that Jide Idris, the commissioner for health, gave an update on the outbreak along with Babatunde Adejare, the Lagos state commissioner for environment, on Friday, January 22.

Idris said that one dead victim was expected to be buried on Friday and revealed that the state has recorded 14 suspected cases of the disease as at January 21.

The commissioner disclosed that the ministry has shortlisted 447 contacts of the confirmed cases and 438 of the contacts who are currently being monitored.

“Three of the suspected cases were confirmed positive of Lasssa fever. One case was confirmed on January 15 and two cases were confirmed on January 18. Eight suspected cases tested negative, while we are awaiting results for the remaining three suspected cases,”he said.

Speaking on the late victim, Idris said that it was a 51-year-old man who lived in Ilasan, Lekki, and returned from Edo state, where he attended a wedding ceremony on December 28, 2015.

“The dead victim will be buried today after due consultation with the family and has been kept in the morgue in leak proof body bag,”he added.
Earlier this week, Prof. Isaac Adewole, the minister of health, confirmed that the virus spread to 17 states, affected 62 local government areas and 212 suspected cases within nine weeks. He also explained why the war against a fast-spreading Lassa fever cannot be fought the same way the country tackled Ebola.
