AlBukhaari, may Allaah have mercy on him, was asked about the reason behind his memorization, and he said: “I do not know of anything more beneficial for memory than desire of man and constant referral and reading.”

It is reported that Al-Ahnaf b. Qays – Allâh have mercy on him – said:

“Restraint is praiseworthy except in three things.” People asked, “And what are they o Abû Bahr?” He replied, “Make haste to do the righteous deed, hurry to conduct the funeral of your deceased, and marry the girl in your charge to a suitable man [as soon as you find him.]”

Umar ibnul Khattab

Fudayl ibn ’Iyyād said:
*If you are able to be unknown, then do so. What does it matter to you if none knows you? What does it matter to you that none praises you? Why would it matter to you that you are criticized by the people if you are (considered) praiseworthy by Allāh?*

Yahya ibn Abu Katheer, may Allaah have mercy on him, said: “Learn intentions, because it is more profound than actions.”

Ibn `Ajlaan, may Allaah have mercy on him, said: “Actions are not purified except by three: Fear of Allaah, pure intentions, and following the Sunnah.

Jaami` Al-`Uloom wa Al-Hikam (1/6869).

Ḥasan al-Baṣrī Raḥimahullāh: “For every Ummah is an idol which is worshipped and the idol of this Ummah is Deenār and Dirham (i.e wealth).”

Al-Hasan al-Basree (d.110) said, "Verily, al-Hajjaaj is the punishment of Allaah. So do not repel the punishment of Allaah with your own hands. But you must submit and show humility, for Allaah the Most High stated, "And indeed We seized them with punishment, but they humbled not themselves to their Lord, nor did they invoke (Allaah) with submission to him." Imaam Abū Hātim rahimahullah, in Rawdatu'l-'Uqalā', said : 'The one who does not preserve his tongue has not understood his religion.'

Abu al-Dardaa (radiyallaahu anhu) used to say:

Whoever did not see the favour of Allah upon him except in food and drink, then his understanding is little and his punishment has drawn near. Al-Zuhd of Abee Dawood (221).
The action Abu al-Dardaa did most was thinking, considering (i'tibaar) and reflection (al-tafakkur).(Istinshaaq Naseem al-Anas of Ibn Rajab, 49). Through 'Min Akhbaar al-Salaf al-Saalih' (p.254).

Al-Imām [Abū Sa'īd] Al-Ḥasan [ibn Yasār] Al-Baṣrī (رحيم الله) said:

"Death has completely exposed this world. And, by doing so, has not left for those of depth and intellect any happiness."

“The majority of those who shout for an Islamic law in the world have neither an Islamic law in their own homes, in themselves, their sons, daughters or their wives. The one who has nothing can't give anything."

Sticking To The Sunnah Is Better


Shaykh Al-Albaani [رحمه الله] said:

«العبرة ليست بكثرة العبادة وإنما بكونها على السنة، بعيدة عن البدعة ، وقد أشار إلى هذا ابن مسعود ـ رضي الله عنه ـ بقوله أيضا: 'اقتصادٌ في سنة ، خير من اجتهاد في بدعة.'»

❝The importance is not of performing a large amount of worship, but rather, is it according to the Sunnah and far away from Bida’.

Ibn Masood [رضي الله عنه] also indicated to this point in his saying: 'sticking to the Sunnah is better than striving in Bida.'❞

A person whose heart has life in it and who enjoys even a minimal level of understanding shall realise the difference between the experience and enjoyment attained from reciting the Words of Allāh (i.e. Qur’ān) and the experience and enjoyment attained from singing lyrics. And he shall recognise the difference between the experience and enjoyment attained from standing before Allāh, the Lord of all the worlds (in salāh) and the experience and enjoyment attained from standing before singers (and musicians). He will also understand the difference between the experience and enjoyment attained from comprehending the meanings of the Words of Allāh and the experience and enjoyment they attain from singing and enrapturement, which is the spell of fornication and the Qur’ān of Satan. By Allāh, whenever the love of both tastes (i.e. Qur’ān and songs) enters the heart of a person, only one of them can remain in the heart as one of them will expel the other

‎Al Hasan Al Basri رحمه الله would say when it was said to him:

‎Will you not fight and make a difference?!

‎Indeed Allah, instead brings about change through repentance, he does not make changes through the sword.

‘Umar ibn ‘Abdul-‘Azeez [may Allāh bestow mercy upon him] wrote a letter to some of his employees:

“To proceed: If your power leads you to oppress the people, then remember the power of Allāh, Exalted be He, over you. Remember, what you do to them [due to your authority] will disappear, while punishment inflicted for you will remain [till the Day of Judgment].”

Al-Muzanī reports:
I heard Al-Shāfiʿī say:

A man once asked Ubay b. Kaʿb – Allāh be pleased with him, “Exhort me with something I can benefit by and by which I will be rewarded.” He replied, “Be brotherly with brothers according to how righteous they are, do not expend your speech on those who are not interested in it, do not seek anyone to meet your need who does not care if he does not fulfil it, and do not envy the living except for something you would envy the dead.”

Al-Ājurrī, Juz fīhi Ḥikāyāt ʿan Al-Shāfiʿī article 24.

Imam Al-Barbahari (may Allah have mercy upon him, died 329 AH) said:

“Know that there has never emerged a heresy or innovation except from the ignorant rabble who follow anyone who calls out wildly. They bend with every wind that blows – so anyone who is like that has no religion. Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic said: «They did not differ until after the knowledge came to them [and then they differed] through envy among themselves.» [Al-Jāthiyah: 19] And they are the scholars of evil, the people of greed and innovation.”

Al-Imām ibn al-Jawzi [may Allāh have mercy on him] said:

“It was said: ‘The example of a person who seeks the worldly-life is like that of a person who drinks [salt] water from the ocean. The more he drinks, the thirstier he becomes, until he is killed by it!’”
