After the 419 Gubernatorial and Presidential elections last year (by 4/19 I mean April 19, coincidentally it means Advanced Fee Fraud and that was exactly what the election was), Chief Bisi Akande, former Governor of Osun State, the man adjudged as one of, if not the best Governor of 1999-2003 said that his defeat was like a thief coming to rob you of your possession, you are harmless, the only thing you can do is just keep quiet and allow it.

2007: Gani vows to stop IBB

THOMAS IMONIKHE

ATTEMPT by former military President Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) to return to power in 2007 yesterday elicited hard knocks from legal luminary, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) who vowed to mobilise Nigerians to scuttle the ambition.

"Babangida is not a man who can be trusted by Nigerians. We will resist him and he will never be allowed to become president again," he told Daily Champion in a telephone interview.

Gen. Babangida had Wednesday picked Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential nomination form at the party’s national secretariat, Wadeta Plaza, Wuse, Abuja amidst fanfare.

Reacting, however, Chief Fawehinmi said IBB was in for a shocker as he would be defeated in next year’s polls if he gets nominated by the PDP as flag bearer.

He said no effort would be spared by human rights community progressives and Nigerians who believe in the rule of law to scuttle the ambition of Minna-born general, accusing IBB of destroying the nations’s economy during his eight-year military rule.

Besides, he alleged that Babangida made it impossible for Nigerians to enjoy the benefits of free and fair elections where he annulled the June 12, 1993 presidential election presumably won by the late Basorun M.K.O. Abiola.

According to the human rights activist, Babangida is not qualified to run having been indicted by the Pius Okigbo Panel of inquiry into the Gulf War oil windfall estimated at $12 billion.

Fawehinmi said section 136 1(i) of 1999 constitution bars those indicted by probe panels and administrative inquiry from seeking elective public offices adding that Babangida was yet to clear his name over alleged complicity in the murder of late journalist, Mr Dele Giwa.

"This man mismanaged our resources for eight years and introduced several programmes like MAMSER and Directorate of Food, Roads and Rural Infrastructure (DFRRI) where public Funds were siphoned to foreign accounts," he alleged.

The Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) of the Babangida’s administration he said pauperised many Nigerians stressing that its negative effect are still being felt by the citizenry.

Fawehinmi said Babangida is not a democrat and should therefore not be voted since he cancelled the 1993 presidential polls adjudged by local and foreign monitors as the nation’s freest and fairest.

IBB and his gang formed the two parties NRC and SDP and in true democracy, the army cannot form political parties for the people. So June 12 was already stage-managed from the beginning. Chief MKO Abiola made a terrible mistake when he fell for the lies of IBB.

One of the reasons we cant trust IBB him and ABIOLA were good friends too
