Recently, a member of the House of Representatives advocated that there should be a new law authorizing the amputation of hands of anyone who stole millions from the country’s treasury. He was also of the opinion that those who steal billions should be hung to death, straight up.

This is not a very new suggestion as quite a number of people in the past have advocated for corrupt politicians who are found guilty to be sentenced to death without any option of fine. Some have even suggested that they should be publicly executed and the execution should be televised so that people can watch as they are hung to death.

Considering the extensive damage that corruption has caused in Nigeria today and the number of lives that have been lost as a result, this might seem like a good idea. Lots of people might jump to the conclusion that they will watch public executions live.

However, a lot of people who advocate for public execution have never witnessed one. They have not experienced the horror of actually watching life snuffed out of a human being.

Inasmuch as public execution might help in drastically deterring people from stealing public funds, it is important to note that the effect of watching a person being killed stays with you longer than you think. People who experience public executions are prone to nightmares, anxiety, panic attacks, etc.

In the United States, execution of criminals are usually done behind closed doors and not in front of a gawking crowd. Still, there are some who think that the killing of a human being, even if it is ordered by the courts, should not be encouraged at all as it shows total disregard for human life.

Do you think death sentence should be encouraged or quashed completely?

If public execution was authorized and you were at liberty to watch the execution of a criminal, would you be bold enough to willingly witness the execution? www.tylegal.com

They need to be put on trial by society in a very public way. For those convicted of stealing from the public purse , I would like to see amputations, and death for repeat offenders.

Politicians should be strapped to lie detector machines during debates , with the results analyzed by a panel of professionals trained in reading polygraph results.

Though death may seem harsh to some , misappropriation of public funds can result in deaths in the general population. Politians & especially the leaders should not make more then the median income of the region.
