I'd like to know the meaning of this word it self or some kind of translation. Millions of people seem to be very passionate about Biafra, so I guess if we can be made to understand It's meaning, we will understand the zeal, the passion and the hope that Biafra carries with it.

Biafra was a word that was probably used to name the former Eastern region in haste. It doesn't have a significatn meaning, its from a random word European explorers used to name the bight which is now in eastern nigeria, the Bight of Biafra (now there's hardly any mention of the 'Bight of Biafra', usually called 'Bight of Bonny', because 'they' were probably scared of secession again) The Bight of Biafra had been the name of the eastern region since the 17th century, probably as an easy way of idnetifying were the salve traders can get their precious 'eboan' slaves destined for the plantations of the new world.

Long story short, the word is about as relevant to the eastern as bowler hats are relevant to the coastal communities cultures.

I've always suspected that this name might be foreign to us. I have searched for the meaning of Biafra since I was a boy, when I first read about the Bicepan war, yet till date I found nothing.

The word has become so powerful in Nigeria though.

But what confuses me is the "Bia" which means come in Igbo/Ibo but I don't know if there's anything like "fra" or any close sounding word with meaning like "vra", "hra" that could could have been corrupted by the Oyibos because they couldn't pronounce it.

What do we know Nigeria for? A country that never works, where more that 80% of the population live on less than a dollar a day, no jobs for youths, no roads, no hospitals, no schools. Our commander-in-chief goes to Germany and Saudi Arabia for Healthcare, for the average Nigerian anywhere but Nigeria is good enough for studies including Ghana and Cameroun.

Why none of these border you and your only point of duty is 'Biafra this Igbo that' bits my immagination.

The last time I checked the Igbo's have not come close to controlling politics in Nigeria since the civil war and can not possibly be responsible for the sorry state of Nigeria.

From Ile Ibinu which they were named by a Yoruba prince. Then one Oba changed it from From Ibinu to Ubini and another just generally called the whole people Edo to include those of us that are not Binis but part of the kingdom. Edo means love.

Are Ibos United under this claim of being held a RANSOM?
