Do You Support On-line Passport ? by Odeku(m): 4:01am On Nov 01, 2006 |
The Controller-General of Immigration (CG), Mr. Chukwurah Udeh, has said the Federal Government has approved on-line application for passports. Udeh said with this in place, there would be a total eradication of passport fraud where a person could have more than one passport. The CG added that after going to other developed countries where passports were being issued in like manner, they presented it to the government that finally granted approval for it. Explaining how the on-line passport worked, the Immigration boss said once a person got his passport, he would be given an electronic micro chip, where all information about the owner is stored and that this would check multiple passport. Udeh said, "This on-line passport is being used in every developed country of the world. We have travelled and we have seen how passport is supposed to be issued. That is why we presented it to the government. E-passport is to check the identity form. An electronic micro chip that will carry the biometry features of the carrier, so that anyone who wants to play prank will be easily detected. This is because once the chip is pressed; the identity of the person will show on the screen of the control PC, stationed at the entry points of the country." He added that, "It is done so that the identity of fraudsters would be seen. It will also involve the fingerprint of the carrier so that the issuance of double or triple passport would be eliminated. One passport is only meant for one person." Giving more reasons for the new development, Udeh said "Apart from the fact that this will checkmate the activities of fraudsters, it will also go a long way in crime detection. Another advantage of on-line passport is that we want to develop our own data-base for the first base data generation. Once your passport expires, you will not need to come again to our office, after the initial interview, you will just apply on-line for the renewal of your passport. We are just starting and very soon, we will get there." |

Mr controller there is no such thing as 100% security when it comes to biometrics geometry. there are lapses but that is another topic, but overall I think this is a good development in Nigeria if it's well funded. |

over all, the price will be passed on to the consumer. the average official tag for a passport in Nigeria not is 8000 Naira look for that price to double once this project is executed. |
