Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. Its
official name is “Day of Ashes,” so called because
of the practice of rubbing ashes on one’s forehead
in the sign of a cross.
Since it is exactly 40 days (excluding Sundays)
before Easter Sunday, it will always fall on a
Wednesday

Since ASH WEDNESDAY precedes LENT what is it significance

i know Lent is intended to be a time of self-denial,
moderation, fasting, and the forsaking of sinful
activities and habits.

Is ASH WEDNESDAY not contradicting JESUS command to his disciple in matt 6:16-17

Moreover when ye fast, be not,
as the hypocritefs, of a sad
countenance: for they disfigure
their faces, that they may
appear unto men to fast. Verily
I say unto you, They have their
reward.

in my opinion ash wednesday is one of the doctrines that Jesus put away...

May GOD help us in our christian race not to falter. IJN

No it's nt. It's no less Dan d various fasting & prayer programs held in oda churches. If wt u say is true, y is it church go & advertise dt dey r holding crusades & fasting programs? In lent, Fasting is expected 2 b a personal thing 4 d person undertaking it. U may choose 2 fast everyday or a few days or any amount of time u choose 2. Don't just go announcing dt u fasted on so & so day.

The same scripture you quoted is the one that my parish priest used for his sermon today, its only a symbolism but what really matters is that what you do after that, i think you should visit Catholic churches more often and see how the priests handle sermons, won't be fair judging from a distance..

It's a symbol. Nothing more. D fact 1 doesn't receive ash on ash Wednesday doesn't make 1 any less a Catholic. It's reminiscent of D d old testament where pple poured ash on their heads as a sign of contrition. Also it serves 2 remind us dt we r nothing bt ashes & dust & 2 dt we wld return 2. If u say it's 4 show, answer y do most pple still carry their big bibles 2 church on Sundays when dey can put it on their phones or devices?
