President Muhammadu Buhari has said Nigeria was starting all over again to rebuild the economy.

He said that Nigeria had relied so much on oil, stressing that with the fall of oil prices, it had become imperative to diversify the economy.

The president spoke Tuesday when he received a team of British Members of Parliament led by Hon. Chi Onwurah at State House, Abuja.

“We are going to rebuild Nigeria, and there are vast opportunities for Britain and us. We share very close ties, and our expectation from you is high”, he said.

President Buhari lamented that Nigeria has found herself in a phase of development, “which is not a very welcome one. We are disorganized because we relied on mono-economic product for too long, and now that oil price is down, we have to go back to agriculture and solid minerals. Tin, columbite, cocoa, groundnut, and others, used to be the basis of our economy, but then, oil came, and everybody began to look for cheap money. Now, we need to start all over again.”

Also speaking, Hon. Onwurah, Nigerian-born MP for Newcastle, said the team was in the country “to promote positive engagement between Nigeria and the UK, since we are stronger when we build on ties of the past.”

She said the mission of her team was to amass support for the economic progress of Nigeria, as well as promotion of trade and diversification of the economy.

Also on the delegation made up of three MPs was the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Paul Arkwright. - See more at: http://www.duketundesblog.com/2016/02/nigeria-economy-we-re-starting-from.html#sthash.e5rke1jg.dpuf

You're starting from scratch because you're not educationally equip to understand what has taken 100 years to build in this part of the world.
This is the same as hiring and illiterate to teach literature, he opens the textbook, gets a headache, closes the book and says
"We're not going to use this book"

But Buhari is right. Things has gone bad globally and it's not only Nigeria this has affected as a result of drop in the oil the oil price, I think he has just been honest with the current situation. Let us all come together to build our beloved country big country like China has gone through worst than this and they came out strong.
They achieved that because they went back to production and they invested so much on industry and human resources.
Nigeria Can do it we have enough talented youth who will turn this country around and can only achieve that if we work together.
May God bless the federal republic of Nigeria

No doubt that the economy has to be moved away from away from excessive importation to export of semi-finished good and finished good .
The whole of Africa is there for us to use as a playground.

The truth is always hard for folks like you. We are starting from scratch as far i am concerned. Look at the foreign reserve account history for the past 16 years and realize where we are economically.

Though I don't really understand d term "from scratch", I totally agree with his statement on an economy based on one commodity. I believe d free fall on d naira should b a wake up call for indigenous investors. Let's imagine a situation where these goods that r being imported with d " now expensive " dollar r being produced locally, it'll create a lot of jobs n at d same time b cheaper. Look at tomato production, even with d large number of raw tomatoes present in d north, we still import processed tomatoes, though kudos should b given to firms like Erisco who r trying to produce locally. D same thing happens to rice, can't we c that companies like Olams n stallion r now having rice farms in Nigeria instead of importing? I believe more investors should come into d manufacturing sector n start manufacturing these goods we import locally; with our large human resources n favourable government policies, I c us exporting these goods with time. If this z what He meant by "starting from scratch", then I totally concur

is the reserve zero? It is for lack of understanding and hands on competence will anyone be starting an economy from the scratch! Are u now saying we start a 100yrs+ journey all over?

Nigeria is not 16yrs old! The narrative of a destroyed economy as always being chanted by the apc/govt is the biggest lie ever told! More so, 80% of apc is pdp so what is new?
